I'd like it to be next purchase.  I'd be using it with my 16" M&P with a 1.5-6x MTAC on board.  The problem is, I know nothing about them...what the differences are...what to look for, etc.  Any help is appreciated

In my opinion Harris Engineering makes the nicest bi-pods.  If you stick with them, you'll be happy.  The next thing to consider will be what height you need it to provide.  If you're shooting prone a lot or on a bench rest, 6 - 9 inches should be fine.  If you're planning to shoot from a kneeling or sitting position, you might opt for something longer or a shooting stick.

I agree with pasowino...there are some pretty fancy "tactical" bipods out there, but it's hard to go wrong with Harris (+ a LaRue mount!).

As for height, I'll add if you plan on shooting prone, consider how much gear you may be laying on top of when calculating height required.

I was looking at Harris on the LaRue site.  Te 6-9" seems fine.  What about swivel?  Locking legs?  Those seem to be the distinguishing faster among models.  Is there a " go to" that makes the most sense for the $ ?

I prefer swiveling, as I rarely shoot from a bench or other perfectly flat surface and the swivel allows you to easily and quickly address cant.  I have smooth legs rather than notched, but the notches will indeed hold the same advantage as the swivel for quick but coarse addresing of cant.

On the swivel models, can you lock the swivel so that it doesn't move when you don't want it to?

The Harris swivel bipods have a knurled knob that will allow you to adjust tension on the swivel point.  Setup from the factory, I would call it difficult at very best to actually 'lock' in position.  Enter the Pod-Loc, and the roll-your-own version::

These will allow you to effectively lock down the swivel.

I may be the odd man out here but I say drop the coin on the Atlas bipod. It may cost more but is definitely made better and by the time you pay for a larue mount and pod lock for your harris you are at the cost of the nicer Atlas.

Yes.

I have the Harris BRM-S with the LaRue mount and it is awesome. Definitely the way to go.

Can you recommend a model for comparison?
