I have a couple newbie questions about Bolt Carrier Groups. I was thinking of getting another Bolt Carrier for my AR. What I need to know is can I use the new Bolt Carrier with my old Bolt, Cam Pin without needing to check head space? And can I put a new complete Bolt Carrier Group in my AR without needing to check head space? Are there any issues swapping these parts out? My AR is Bushy M4 type 14.5 has about 400rds. thru it so far. I'm sure these are elementry questions but hey if you don't know (and I don't) then ask. Thanks! |

As noted you are good to go either way here, new carrier w/ old bolt, cam pin, firing pin and retainer or new bolt, cam pin, firing pin and retainer and old carrier. One thing though ya might not have thought of: SPARE PARTS, as a broken bolt, (rare yes, but it does happen) without a spare will put your SHTF weapon out of action, so a whole new BCG (assuming the carrier is of the style you are eyeballing) gets you an entire spare BCG meaning your covered for this protion of your current weapon. YMMV, but I have several "quality" complete parts sets for uppers and lowers as well as many pin and spring sets, bolts, extractors, defender type o-rings as well as other extractor upgrade & field repair kits in my spare parts bin - for that day that say the buffer retaining pin or spring launches itself into the nether regions behind that sofa or the frig in the kitchen..... While one can always cannibalize one weapon to get another up and running, there will come a day that parts may be unavailable at any price. IMO best to plan for that day "now". A person with only one rifle should make certain it'll stay running. mike |

Ok Thanks! My reasoning was I was thinking of getting one of those MPI Bolt Carrier Group. Then I saw that Bolt Carriers with properly staked bolt Carrier Keys were available. Thought maybe that might be the way to go and worry about the bolt later??? right now at this point in time I don't need anything in the BCG. Or....would I be better off just buying a complete BCG to have as a spare? If I go that route do I need to check head space or just stick it in and be good to go? |

You ought to be able to stake the carrier more with a punch and hammer or similar tool, or you can send it to several people to get it restaked. The bolt will be MPI. You can pick up a new MPI bolt or whole BCG. I just picked up a Bravo Co MPI M16 BCG. Now I have a complete spare if needed. But thats just me. -Hershey |

I might go with a whole new BCG? I need the semi BC though as mine is a semi and I have no intentions to covert it legally or illegally. Can I just whap the carrier key with a punch and stake it better? So far no problems but its a piss poor job Bushmaster did. Why don't they fire the dipshit that has no idea how to properly stake one? Goddamn its just as easy to stake it properly as to fuck it up. Bushmaster must have some real wizards working for them. |
