This seems like a dumb problem, but the bolt catch buffer and spring are stuck in my lower. Any ideas how to get them out?

Whoops

I used a little needle to move the plunger out then grab the spring.

Bad idea. The detents are tool steel and very tough to drill. The lower is relatively soft aluminum. If you attempt to drill, you will very likely damage the receiver.

If you poke the detent, does it move at all?

Nope its stuck. Dental pick won't move it. I'm thinking the lower may have been slightly undersized and when i installed it, it just stuck.

It might move if you add some oil. Break free, CLP, penetrating oil. -W

Any photos so that we can see exactly what is going on?

Have you tried a really strong neodymium magnet? A decent-sized one (1/2" x 1/2" x 1/2" or larger) might be able to pull it out.

Blow it with compressed air out of a very small nozzle.  A little oil won't hurt either.

Sorry haven't gotten a pic yet. Just imagine its pushed all the way in and won't come out.

Been soaking in oil for a few hours and won't budge.

The same exact thing happened to me the first lower i built.
I had the wrong spring in with the plunger and had to drill a small hole above the bolt catch channel.
The plunger and spring came right out.

Try tapping on the other side of the lower with a sand hammer. If that doesn't work, I'd carefully heat the inner side of the lower with a propane torch to expand it a little. Aluminum will expand quicker than steel.

Problem solved.

I took Spartan's advice and drilled a small hole on top of the channel and it popped out enough to grab with small pliers and work it out.

The pin was a tad oversized. I used another pin that I had and it worked perfect.

Thanks for all the replies.
