| After the bolt failed to lock back on a poorly made, after-market magazine, I drop the magazine out and pulled the handle and got on the bolt stop a little early. The bolt came back only about an inch then stuck. I had to use the forward assist to get it going again. Is this normal? Usually I wait until the bolt is back to push the stop in. |

It's not normal, but is common. You will need to remove the bolt latch and grind off the sharp corner that is wedging itself in the underside of the bolt carrier groove. Just cut the corner off, should have flat spot about 1/16" to 1/8" showing. This line from the checklist in this same topic: "Check the bolt catch tension and range of motion; depress bottom of bolt catch and retract carrier, check for binding of carrier on the bolt catch". You can do this test with or without a magazine in place. If this problem is not corrected, it will damage the bolt catch roll pin causing difficult removal and possible breakage. This is only a last round problem. If you single load it happens every time you fire. Usually the carrier will overcome the binding, but you will still have the aforementioned damage. This binding can also cause short stroking of the bolt assy.,which may have been the cause of the failure to lock open. Read the checklist at the beginning of the trouble shooting section in it's entirety. |

Here is a link to an article with a couple of pictures on what I believe is the same problem I had. The carrier in my Bushy was hanging up on the bolt catch while using a single shot follower. You may have to copy and paste link to work. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/jesse99/AR_Carrier.html AR Carrier |
| I have checked with the BFI people and they said that the bolt carrier may have had the firing pin slot cut too wide. The bolt stop is supposed to ride on the thin edge left after machining the firing pin slot. I checked another BFI AR and it has a wider edge and no trouble with dragging the bolt stop. I returned my carrier to BFI after talking to them. We'll see. |

Well..... BFI returned my carrier and said they had 'deburred the carrier'. It still functions exactly the same, so now I quess I'm on my own. I will look into the bolt stop modification. Pretty sad when you buy a weapon and it doesn't work without tinkering. Thanks for the help. |
