| Getting a 16" 1:9 Chrome Lined AR for myself for my 18th birthday, and I'd like to have some ammo on hand before the rifle gets here so I can shoot upon delivery. I was looking at AE223 as a possible break-in ammo because it is affordable, brass, and a load that fits in the parameters of what 1:9 was designed for. The other ammo I was looking at was the Guat Surplus that AIM has. I'm leaning towards the AE223 for the fact that it is new ammo for a new gun. What are your reccomendations? |

AE .223 sounds like a good choice for breaking in a new weapon. At least a couple hundred rounds before trying any cheap plinking underpowered ammo. (Wolf) By using good clean full powered ammo. If you have any problems with your weapon you will not have to worry about ammo being part of the problem. I would bust out some 5.56 ammo and run it. Break it in right!!! |
AE = American Eagle which is manufactured by Federal ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=288703 |

For your first run of the rifle, pick quality components. Not because there's a need for "break in", but because it makes troubleshooting easier. Get a couple of USGI mags, some ammo which is known for reliability and shoot away. Once you've established that the rifle shoots fine with these components, you can try different ammo and mag types to your heart's content. |
| Don't be suprised if your new weapon farts, sneezes, pisses and pukes for the first few mags. The trouble shooting forum is always full of posts of people on the brink of sending perfectly fine new rifles back to the manufacturer that haven't been givin a chance to break in. Clean it, lube it well and don't swet the break in problems. |
Thanks for that tip. That is one thing I wouldn't have expected, but does make decent sense, thanks for the heads up. I am going with the "just shoot it" theory, but wanted to make sure I had picked a quality ammo. |
Best advice here.^^^^^^^^ |

I broke in my brand new GSE A3M4 yesterday. Shot a total of 330 rounds including: 60 rounds of XM193 - shot well - groups of 1 MOA at 50 yrds - 5 shot 60 rounds of Radway 63 gr. - very hot ammo- 1.5 MOA at 50 yrds - LOTS of ammonia smell 60 rounds Federal A223 - 55 gr. - shot very well for less expensive ammo - 5 shot groups of 1.5 MOA at 50 yrds- largest flash of the bunch. 60 rounds of TAP 75 FPD used for sight-in- best groups of all - .75 MOA at 50 yrds - Tack driving ammo and POWERFULL, best punch of all of the ammo. Well worth the price. Used the 1st 30 rounds to sight in the BUIS and Eotech and the last 5 rounds of that mag produced the .75 MOA group with the Eotech. I quit zeroing at that point .... hehehe 60 rounds of WWB Q3131- Good powerful ammo at a reasonable price - 1 MOA - 5 shot group and shot the riffle offhand with it - 1 30 round mag dump in 30 seconds offhand produced a group of 30 shots in a 4 inch group at 25 meters - impressive :) 30 rounds of rem UMC - 55 gr - seemed the least hot of them all- least impressive groups at 50 yrds at 2.5 inch's - VERY funky smell, but have to say I shot this mag 2nd in the line-up so it could have been effected by riffle break-in. The riffle digested ALL rounds with no FTF's or FTE's and it pleased the hell out of me that it did this brand new out of the box at break-in. It was a long day at the range but, a VERY fun one. |
I would pick the A.E. over IMG Most All makers wont replace your AR15 if you use Surplus ammo Just to let you know! I do shot the IMG and never had any trouble! Its up to you BTW I have a Bushmaster Shorty 1/9 twist and it shoots 77 gr. and 75 gr GREAT |
PLZ Dont waste your money The USGI are Fine and our boys still use them Today Since the ban was lifted they can be had CHEAP I paid under 10 bucks a Mag I like the OLD Colt 20 rounders with Metal Followers BEST wich are over 30 years old and STILL going strong! HK are good mags made of Steel but I would never pay the HUGE Price Save your cash for good ammo |
My BUSHMASTER shorty has Fired over 2000rds and the Barrel still looks the SAME I fired 950rds out of my New LMT M4 its almost broke in 1000rds = break in on a Battle rifle/carbine BTW federal AE is more accurate in my AR`s than XM193 |
Now throw some Wolf down her throat. |
Ok u just bought 9 HK mags for $450 I just got 50 C-Products USGI's with Magpul Gen II's for $450..... 9 mags or 50 mags??? |
