I've got a new DPMS Lower, that Has been waiting on a upper, and the dang thing broke when I was trying to pull down the trigger guard. The trigger guard tab that holds the pin broke off. Does DPMS use cheap metal or something? It looks like a cyramic plate, and I know cyramic stuff that wouldn't brake under the pressure I put on it. How could I tell if the pin was oversized? The pin was protruding slightly on the side that broke, so I am thinking stress was put on it when it was inserted. DPMS won't do anything for me, so I still have some calls to make. Does anyone know of a soluation or fix for this? Even if there was a way to fix it, the gun just seems tainted now. I have never had a gun break on me in my life, and my bushmaster has been rugged and trustworthy. |

I have an magpul advanced trigger gaurd. Once it place it has a gap above it that would be plenty of room to weld the tab back on. If not then, I don't see why the whole trigger gaurd can't be welded on nice and neat. Is there some kind of gunsmith tool or prace that prevents these things from breaking. I sure as heck do not want to try hammering on the pin if I decide to install anything in the future. |
Were you trying to hammer the pin out? It seems some folks are breaking the ears off while using a hammer & more force than is necessary. A punch & tap set is the easiest & safest way to get these pins out as well as a solid block to brace the ears while tapping. Edit for link: ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=12&t=382037 |

Honestly, I'd just scrap the lower. Even if you fix it, you'll always know it's there and it'll bother you infinitely. I did the same thing with a Colt 6920 lower, I wound up sending it back to Colt and having a new lower remade. That part of an AR15 is exceptionally weak. |

I think I found a solution. To keep my gun from being tainted I just won this Upper on Gunbroker for $350 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=101955626 The YHM risers have a value of $35 I believe, and if thats the cheapest Harris goes for $67, so that means the upper alone only cost about $248. I think I got a good bargain? I gathered up all my extra parts and added up with I would need to build another lower receiver. That came to $160 for complete lower with A2 stock, and never used parts. Now I am going to use the new receiver in that build on my current gun, fix the old one by having it welded, or use jb weld if I have to lol, slap in my Ciener 22 kit or swap the bolt and charging handle from my 3rd Ar15 and let my girlfriend shoot it at the range. Since the upper came out soo cheap I won't worry about fouling it up with .22 ammo. Total cost of complete gun with scope risers, harris bi-pod using current extra parts $510 My other setups have cost twice as much. |

That is definitely a weak area. I always am nervous when removing or installing that particular roll pin. Now was this a complete lower assembled by DPMS? If it was they should replace it. If it was a stripped lower assembled by a vendor, they should replace it. If you installed the roll pin, you installed it improperly and it is on you. Those roll pins go in fairly easy when properly aligned and the area is properly supported. If all you did was try to open the triggerguard and it broke it was due to improper installation. If you tried to remove that roll pin prior, again it is on you. Let us know what the circumstances were. For the record many guys have reassembled the triggerguard unit as best they could with the broken parts, closed it and JB welded it together and closed with no ill effects, even after a great deal of use. |
