I just bought a broken shell extractor cause it's "a must tool to have for any ar-15 owner".  The only problem I have is that it didn't include instructions on how to use the damn thinghow

Lets say that you either have a rim or shoulder case separation.  This means that the back of the brass is pulled from the chamber, but the forward section is still wedged.

To use the tool, you open the action, and insert the complete tool into the chamber, and them let the bolt slam home.  This will drive the flared end of the tool past the mouth of the stuck section still in the barrel, then all you would need to do is just cycle the action to pull both the tool and the front section of the separated case from the chamber.

If you noticed on the tool, the front flaring section is expanded when you pull back on the tool and not forward.  This allow the front to expand out when the bolt is pulling it back of the action, and not when it is being driven past the mouth of the broken section of the brass.
