| New gun owner here. My Stag upper just came in on Tuesday. I haven't had a chance to get to the range yet, but I'd like to start our cleaning the correct way. I've heard that those barrel brushes are terrible for barrels and to only use patches. Of course all of the military handbooks in the "library" section show using a barrel brush. I don't get it. I have a chrome lined barrel if that makes any difference. Also, after I use Hoppes Powder Solvent/Remington Copper Remover am I suppose to patch the barrel with regular gun oil? |

I think bronze/brass brushes get better results than nylon ones. I never liked the "tornado jags". As long as whatever you're putting down your barrel is of softer than the barrel metal it will be safe to use. just a matter of what works better for you. A carbon fiber cleaning rod works way awesome. I also use a chaimbermaid flexible rod to get at the chaimber and lugs without much effort |

Instead of a patch jag, I prefer to use a patch wrapped around an old bore brush. This both scrubs and wipes the bore. I do this 2-3 passes with CLP then follow up with a few passes with a new bore brush... then a pass with CLP again and finally a pass with a dry patch around the old bore brush. The reason for the old bore brush is (1) it gives them a little longer usage life, and (2) my patch jag doesn't get stuck if I use a slightly oversize patch. |
