Noob question, but what difference will i notice in a middy carbine 16" with various buffers?  Reduced recoil? Better function?  Reduced wear?  Magic zomie death machine ray gun?  Waht's the difference?

A 9mm buffer, Enidine or MGI buffer will lessen bolt bounce, felt recoil and muzzle climb.  Faster follow up shots become easier as a result.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!  Spend the money on an Ergo grip or something!  My $.02.

+1

It is possible to "over do" it.

I put BOTH a heavier buffer and a more powerful spring in my 10" SBR, and it just ended up short-stroking

Either one was fine, but the combination was too much.

My 16" Middy has a David Tubb's flat wound ISMI recoil spring, (same length for CAR and rifle length) a CMT "H" buffer, and CMT enhanced carrier. I don't have any issues with WWB 45gr. Varmint, WWB 55gr. FMJ, or Q3131.

might be careful with the middy, the heavy buffer might cause problems.

i run the mgi buffer in mine.

I asked my armorer the same question. He asked me if I was having any problems with the buffer I was running. I havn't so I got this look of "why try to fix something that isn't broke"

Leave the gun as is.

Your department armorer has never used a heavier buffer.

Mine works in my POF and a 9mm works well in my DPMS M4.  I can definitely tell the difference, but I don't have a happy position on mine, so I can't confirm or dispute what you say there (about FA).

I have a friend who has a 14.5" auto M4, with a 9mm buffer I can actually get a 1 shot burst with the selector on auto.  With an H or regular carbine buffer no less than a 2-3 shot burst.  YMMV.  It also runs a lot more reliably with the 9mm buffer.

You can over do it.  My 14.5" LMT (SBR) will short cycle with an early stiffer rate Enidine carbine buffer but runs 100% in 1K (so far) with their newer weaker one and seems to cycle smoother as well.  It also runs well with a LMT H buffer.  My other SBR, a 11.5" with a Noveske KX3 runs 100% with either Enidine and actually recoils less than the 14.5" LMT.

OK, lots of info, some not so topical.  Not full auto, Not SBR.  Looking for reduced muzzle jump, reduced recoil only.  Gun seems to funtion fine now.   16" mid gas, hbar.  I would rather not spend another $160 + for the MGI, $90 for the Endine unless it rocks.  9mm buffer maybe?  tell me what you think about my application.  It aint broke, but i would like to fix it .

Given this either the Enidine or 9mm would work.  The Enidine is a little better.  If I had the funds I would buy the Enidine, if not the 9mm isn't bad at all.  You should be able to get a 9mm buffer for about $25 and not more than $29.  I didn't think mine "needed fixing" either, but I listened to Stick.  He earns his living with AR's and everything he has ever advised me to do worked. Everytime I did not heed his advice, I wished I had.  When he doesn't have experience with something, he says so and offers no advice.  Read his post above.

Would I get the results I am looking for witha comp instead of a buffer change?  Never really used a comp before, but?

They are extremely loud and provide no flash suppression.  I used a Miculek comp, it worked but I prefer the buffer change over the comp. YMMV.

You'll get the most recoil reduction using a brake.  But most will increase flash and are VERY loud.  I use a Bennie Cooley muzzle brake on my 3 gun rifle pictured here.

The muzzle brake comibined with a rifle length buffer in this rifle make it recoil only a little more than a 10/22 Ruger.  The muzzle brake alone takes away about 80% felt recoil.  I also run an adjustable gas block 4 turns open.
