I have a few carbines here. They all have a buffer that is about 3.5" long. Is that the correct size?

Is the longer buffer (~6" long) only for use in a rifle? Or what?

Yes, the longer buffer is for use in a rifle length buffer tube, the shorter for the collapsible stock tube.
