Question #1
What is the life span on a buffer spring?  I purchased a used AR some time back and don't know how many rounds had been fired out of it.  The rifle had been cleaned very well, but I could see some wear which means it was probably used quite a bit.

Question #2
How will I know if I need to replace it.  Will it fail to feed, or some other symptom?

If you can see wear on it, get a new one.  Make sure it's the right length.  They're cheap enough, why wait for it to fail.

the buffer sping timing light will begin to flash at the end of its life span along with an audible warning siren.

okay....in reality i was told from a local guru to replace every 5,000 rounds but that doesnt seem reasonable to me.  id figure it would go a way beyond that point and i think he is just trying to sell springs.  id also like to hear a knowledgeable source on this one

One other thing I'd like to know is, as much as I love keeping my bolt locked open for long periods of time to show it's not loaded, sometimes I feel a little guilty like I'm adding to it's wear by keeping the buffer spring compressed.. I'm pretty sure my fears are for naught as being compressed isn't what wears springs out, it's the compressing\uncompressing but can someone put me at ease here?
