For the buttstock screw it is 1/4"x28.

sorry, can't help then...I have the big tap from doing 80% lowers but I don't have a die that size

and unless you can find someone to loan you one, you'll probably find it cheaper to get a new tube as a die that size will probably be in the $50-$60 range

ETA: are the threads so bad that one of those thread repair file wouldn't work?

Hadn't considered, that. That's why we all come here...  

It's a 3 position alum carbine tube and I'm not sure if it's repairable. I can't remove the castle nut. Have to give it a try though!

I fixed the threads on an early buffer tube recently with a thread file. Just run the lathe in reverse and hold the thread file backwards so it pulls away from the shoulder rather than into it.
