I have a 16" m4 profile barrel sitting on top of a complete colt a3 lower.  In the butt stock it still runs the factory spring and rifle buffer.  The problem is that since I got rid of the 24" barrel and went to the 16" barrel it continually has problems.    It either doesn't pick up a round or it doesn't eject the round fast enough before it picks up another.  This past weekend I didn't even get 1/2 way through the first magazine before it wedged another round into the chamber.  It feels like the bolt is slamming the back of the buffer tube and flying forward way to fast.  And I belive that going to another heftier buffer would fix this problem, but I thought I would ask some pros before I went to a heavier bolt.  Does this limit my choice of a buffer to the H3 which is all that I believe is heavier than the rifle buffer.

It doesn't matter what mags I use or the round either it still manages to not pick up the round more often than naught.  Which really leads me to believe that the bolt is traveling faster than the springs in the mags can push another round up.  Is this correct.

How long since you replaced the buffer spring?  Maybe a new CS spring?

All together on the spings and even the Colt bcg I haven't put but maybe 500 to 750 rounds down the pipe with them.

What weight Buffer are you running?  Sounds like you need a heavier Buffer to help slow it down.  Read Bolt moving to fast for the magazine to keep up with causing no round loaded.

you should try H1 buffer > then carbine tube and spring if H1 buffer doesn't fix the problem.

Are you sure?  A rifle length buffer weighs in at 5.17 oz's and a H1 buffer weighs in at 3.8 oz's.

I wonder if thats even the problem and something else aint going on to cause this.

I may go ahead and replace the spring anyway.  If it doesn't fix it then I will have a spare.  Who makes or sales a good spring?

I don't know anything about tuning an AR, but..

You are using a rifle buffer and spring, but you have gone to a carbine or midlength gas system?
Don't you have much higher gas pressure with the 16" barrel?

Maybe your buffer is really bouncing off the back of the tube and cycling your action too fast.
I wonder if a stiffer spring might slow down the cycle by reducing the bounce of the buffer
from the back of the tube?

I think you nailed it...  looks like you have gone from a rifle length (lower pressure at the gas port) system to a carbine length (high pressure at gas port) gas port with a rifle buffer/spring.

Sounds like a great opportunity to get a collapsible stock, carbine buffer and spring.  If that is not an option, a stiffer spring, a heavier buffer if you can find it, or even perhaps going to a full auto bolt carrier (like BCM's) to slow down the rearward travel.

Well this isn't my go to rifle, which makes it easier to handle as far as time.  It's my kiss rifle with a colt detachable carry handle and fsb.  + I like the A2 stock compared to an adjustable m4.  I may eventually try a ctr or vltor but for now I like it the way it is.  As far as a full auto bcg the colt one I have is.  It is definetly striking the end of the tube.  I appreciate the advice and I will try to find some heavier duty springs and go to a heavier carbine buffer.
