so, I have a middie upper. I'm trying to decide whether to use a collapsible CAR-type stock or getting an A1-type stock from CavArms.

do I need to use a rifle buffer with a rifle stock, or is the rifle buffer just for use with a 20" barrel?

is the stock type what determines the buffer type or is it the gas system length?

Stock determines buffer size.  For the most part gas system and buffer systems are independent of each other.  A balance must be struck between the two for the rifle to run right.  That balance can be achieved with either buffer system mated to any of the various length gas systems though.

Also, not sure if you mean the actual A1 stock from CavArms or the Cav15 polymer lower, but if you're planning on going with the polymer lower it is actually a carbine size buffer tube.

ETA, you can also get a spacer that allows you to run carbine sized buffers in rifle receiver extensions.  No way to go the other way around though.

I meant the A1 CavArms stock on my aluminum lower. which of course means I will have to get a rifle receiver extension.

so, buffer is more or less determined by stock type then? that makes sense. thanks for the response!
