Recently ordered a Del-Ton 16 in. pencil barrel A2 upper kit. Do I have to replace the buffer spring in my Colt 20 in.rifle size lower with a carbine size spring?

not if you still use a A2 sutt stock. The type of stock determines the buffer and buffer spring. Acollapsible stock requires a carbine length spring and buffer.
