I just bought four SP1 stocks with the SP1 buffer which is heavy... and I'm trying to build a very light rifle.

I've done some searching but haven't found the specific answers I'm looking for...

On a 16" gun, is a heavy buffer more reliable? Less? Has no impact either way? Does a light buffer increase wear? I'm not particularly recoil sensitive, but if there is a meaningful difference either way I'd like to hear about that as well...

Thanks!

The heavy buffer slows things down a tad, which creates more of a push than a kick in felt recoil (and less muzzle rise).  It smooths out things and generally aids in reliablity.  I use them, but I would suggest you try out a light buffer for a mag, then a heavy buffer for a mag, and see for yourself.

These are my findings, others might have a different view of things.

Like Stickman said, it slows down the action which can change how recoil impulses move the gun.  Marginal mags may work with a slower cycle speed when a normal cycle speed might cause malfs, e.g. due to weak mag springs.

I prefer the action to cycle as quickly as possible, because for it I perceive the recoil to be straighter back instead of "up", and the gun stops moving sooner.
