Build #1 was a 20" rifle with no iron sights, and a 3x9 scope. Basically built an accuracy rifle, hoping to use for yotes and varmints.
I'm thinking I need a short range rifle, open sights, possible red dot sight sometime down the road. I'm not wanting to deal with the tax stamps etc to build an SBR. So I think I'm going to start accumulating parts for a 14.5 " bbl with a pinned & welded flash hider to get to a 16" bbl. I have a couple questions - Free float hand guard - I get the free float on a precision rifle, the less contact and influence on the bbl the better. Is this necessary on a mid-length rifle with open sights? What does it actually get you for this kind of build? When do you cross the legal line on an SBR? If I collect parts for an upper I'll probably keep my eyes open for a decent 14.5 " bbl with FH already on it, pinned and welded. But if I happen to stumble across a deal on a bare bbl, what can I and can't I do? I presume I can't mount the assembled upper (sans flash hider) onto the lower (not a pistol lower - it's been built as a rifle) - but can I have a completed upper in possession with the FH not welded yet and not be in violation? I'm thinking of assembly sequences. |
Or just say fuck it and pay the stamp for a SBR and get an even shorter barrel![]() But to answer your question. Buy a 14.7 and pin an A2 on it, or get a 14.5 and have a longer FH pinned on. Even on a shorter barrel a free float is still helpful. Necessary, no but neither is it on a longer barrel gun. Just because the barrel is shorter doesn't mean it's only good for close range. As for the legal question. A bare barrel no one will care . An assembled upper that isn't yet pinned, don't go out shooting it and bragging about it on the internets. Get it pinned as soon as possible. If you want to be super paranoid safe just don't have a BCG for that upper until it is pinned. Is that a get out of jail free card, no. But it does make it harder to argue constructive intent. |
