I am building my first sbr and I want to use a 10.5"bbl and I am looking into possibly installing the Hera linear comp gen 2. I want a hand guard that covers the base tapered end of the comp for aesthetics, but I want about two inches of the compensator to extend beyond the rail. I guess what I am trying to figure out is how does the barrel length and handguard length measure up at the business end? I have searched this a bit and only find suggestions on what people personally like the looks of. Does an 11" hand guard extend .5" past the end of a 10.5" bbl when installed? Thanks in advance!

You have to find out the exact measurement of your handguard, and from where they are measuring it.  For instance, Midwest Industries gives you the exact measurement on their web site of their handguards and it is measured from the front of the top rail on the upper.

For barrel length, measure from the center of the pivot pin hole (or from the face of the bolt in the closed position, that is more accurate, but the center of the pivot pin is more than close enough for what you are talking about).  A 10.5 inch barrel will measure 10.5 inches from the center of the pivot pin.  If you use a MI 10.5 inch handguard, it measures from the front of the top rail, so you have to do some ciphering to determine where it will hit on your barrel.  On my AP upper, the front of the top rail is .250 inches forward of the center of the pivot pin.  So, my MI 10.5 inch rail sets 1/4 inch forward from the end of my 10.5 inch barrel.

So, you are going to have to do some homework.  Find out exactly what your barrel length is, many 16 inch barrel are really 16.250 inches... and find out the exact length of your forend and from where it is measured.  Then you have to take into account the length of the threads, from the face of the barrel shoulder to the end of the muzzle, and how long your muzzle device is.  These are all things you have to measure or find out for yourself because I don't think any two companies measure things exactly the same, or if they do, they don't do it on purpose.

Thanks for the example you have with your setup. Some brands offer more information than others and that's where I have been getting mixed information. I think I will buy my barrel and compensator and then install them temporarily in the upper so I have a base measurement before I pick out my handguard.

I bought a 10" Ballistic Advantage and paired it with a 10" ALG rail.  Both measured at exactly 10" using the method above.  My muzzle was inside the rail by about 1/16th.. If that helps..

That does help thank you for the info. Now I may have to start looking for an 11 inch rail to get the look I am after.
