So I'm helping my girlfriend pick out an AR to build/buy. We are not absolutely set on building one if we can find a complete rifle that she likes. Really her only stipulations are that she wants it to look cool and she wants to put a scope on it. From the scope comment I assume she wants something accurate, so I'm going that route. For her it will probably only be used on the range and it's rare to find a place that has a longer than 100yard range. I'm ok with putting together a lower, so I can get those parts and do it, but with an upper, I'd prefer a complete upper so I won't have to deal with barrel, gas block, muzzle device installation.
So here's the specs I'm looking for suggestions on: I'm looking for an upper with an 18-20 stainless steel barrel and free float handguards, with rifle or midlength gas system. Also lower parts/complete lower/or complete rifle. Oh, also, she's a lefty, so I can get some ambi controls and put them on or get a lower that has them already. Also, she was in the Army and carried an M4 when she deployed, so she's not a newbie to this type of rifle, just the picking one instead of being issued one. We are wanting to keep the budget at around $1500 so that we can get a decent scope and stay under $2000. She will be making the final decision with my council, and if I like what she gets, I may get a matching rifle for myself. :D So anyway, enough rambling, I appreciate any suggestions you guys may have. |

Why an 18-20" barrel? Especially to only shoot 100yds. A longer barrel isn't more accurate anyways...it's just longer. I'd look at a 16" light weight middy upper from DD or BCM, then just add lower of your choice.

Stag Arms makes a leftie AR. Might be something to look into. Then upgrade parts as needed.
https://www.stagarms.com/left-handed-rifles/ Most are well under your $1500 budget so you can personalize it and still be under budget. |

Here's what I would build for the core components with that kind of budget.
San tan tactical lower, fully ambi $270 ish. Rainier arms medcon profile select barrel 16" or 18" $260 Rainier arms compensator $60 Your favorite Lightweight free float rail $200-$250 The rest of the parts are a less specific for your needs. I do suggest that for the trigger you at least use an alg trigger with yellow jp springs. |

I say build it left handed. I'm left handed and all though I built a right handed upper with a ambi lower sometimes I get shells in my face depending on the ammo I use. Brass ammo ejects fine and doesn't hit me but Tula steel case ammo does.
San Tan lower Battle Arms ambi safety selector Stag left hand receiver and bolt VooDoo ultra light 16" barrel w/ ambi extension Light weight free float rail (BCM KMR or Noveske NSR) Low profile gas block Umbrella Corp LPK w/ grip https://www.ucwrg.com/materiel/promos-deals-and-after-school-specials/57/lower-parts-kit-minimalist--alg-qms-trigger/ Then whatever parts her heart desires. |

I am helping my g/f build her first AR. On Friday her free float rail arrived. This ting is nice and worth every penny.
It is a 14 inch Fortis rail coming in at 9.5 ounces. It has keymod on the sides and full rails on the top and bottom and uses a std. barrel nut. Fortis |
| Build the lower, buy a left hand upper, or just buy her a left hand rifle and replace parts as time goes on. Not sure why she would need a free float hand guard vs a drop in setup but to each their own. Stainless is also pretty heavy if she is every going to stand and shoot it. |
