I have built a couple ar's from kits. When I purchase the kit the upper is complete with the barrel. So my question is this time I am buying a Sun Devil slick side upper and lower what issues do I have with installing the barrel? I intend to put on either a DD or LaRue FF Rail. So when I install the barrell and whatever type of barrel nut is there an issue with headspace? If so how do I adjust/correct that? Or is the barrel headspaced allready and all I am doing is installing it to the reciever.
Thanks in advance!! |

The headspace in the AR type rifle is determined by the relationship of the chamber cut in the barrel, and the bolt face, which is located by the barrel extension. unless you are going with a custom barrel blank, the barrel extension will already be permanently affixed to the barrel, thus determining the headspace for you. Matched bolt and barrel sets are available from several makers, but bolts that are in spec and barrels that are in spec should result in a put it together and shoot it situation. This modularity is one of the huge draws of this rifle, and I'd wager very, very few of the folks assembling rifles ever check the headspace. That being said, it is a good idea after assembling any high powered rifle to check the headspace, better safe than sorry, and it's a minimal expense to obtain gages or have it done. BTW, our Gator Grip handguards look great on Sundevil rifles with checkered magwells! |
