How inportant is headspacing barrell to upper receiver, have been told it's not since the AR is mass produced

Headspace is important, but the upper receiver does not affect headspace on the AR.  The AR headspaces off of the bolt and barrel extension.  The upper receiver is essentially a shell that holds the other components.

Headspace can and should be checked but is not something that can realistically be changed in these rifles.  If the bolt, extension and barrel are in spec. headspace should be fine.

Headspace is ALWAYS important. New ARs are built to similar specs across the board, but to build a gun without having the headspace checked is irresponsible.

Where does one get gauges and how are they utilized? M1 Rifles are easy to check headspace on. How 'bout AR's? H.

Brownells sells them.  They should come with instructions but using them usually entails completely stripping the bolt (extractor and ejector) and putting it back in the bolt carrier, hand inserting the gauge into the chamber, and trying to close the BCG on it.  I just used a Colt field gauge to check the headspeace on mine.  Just so you know reinstalling the ejector will more than likely be a pain in the ass.
