I am planning on building 3 AR-15's but had a question.  Is it absolutely neccessary to use roll pin punches or will regular punches work fine?

Not necessary, but will make life easier.

Go ahead and get a liitle tool kit, brass puches/hammer and all. you will be glad you did.
30 bucks is worth it compared to messing up a 150+ lower.

Only took my first build to make me decide to get the kit for my next 4 builds.

If absolutely do not want to buy, look in Hometown forum, and see if anyone has any they will lend out.

My Dealer I usually use was also very accomadating.

Does anyone have any links to any good roll punch kits?

I don't have a link but I bought mine from Brownells.  You can use the search feature on the web-site to find them.

I used automatic sizing pliers to build mine last night.  Used a rubber hammer to get them seated, and used tape on the pliers so that I didn't scratch anything.  I used punches to make them even/flush if I couldn't with the pliers.

Similar to these pliers.

I bought a set of roll pin punches from Sears last week for 20 bucks. I have all kinds of regular punches and they will work just fine but the roll pin punches help you from slipping off and scratching you weapon. They also won’t deform the end of the roll pin like a flat punch might.

Also on a separate note, I have assembled several ARs without roll pin starter punches. I even have two sets of parallel jaw pliers I use (taped up of course) but I figure what the heck, I'm a tool geek so I bought the roll pin starters. Holy crap..what a difference they make. They work like a champ!! Well worth the 17 bucks I paid for them.

You could get by with a nail and a rock but the right tools separate the shade tree mechanic from a real mechanic. I guess that’s just the aircraft mechanic in me talking…
