Thinking of building a CMP M16A2 rifle, and need some advice on the guidelines for a CMP rifle.
Specifically, should I go for a 20" or 16" barrel, and what profile? Is it worth getting a freefloat sleeve for the standard A2 handguards? Is there a legal stock other than the A2 stock? What advantages does a hooded rear sight aperature have over a standard one? What kind of triggers are legal (2 stg vs 1 stg)? Do I have to use the original plastic pistol grip? Thanks! |

Sir, If I may, I am an National Match Armorer and do so under contract for the CMP, I will try to assist you: 20'' Barrel is required (16" are not allowed in competition) Service Rifle Freefloat front handguard assembly is a must, or you will not be able to attain the desired accuracy. A2 stock is the standard but the original A1 stock is also allowed. No collapsable stocks are allowed. Hooded NM rear sights are best as they cut glare and are easier to use at distance. 2 stage only.(national match triggers are best) No single stage triggers are allowed in service rifle division. The original pistol grip A2 is required. Best regards, Sights |

Thanks! Does the 20" barrel have to be any specific profile? Or am I free to choose between heavy and bull barrel configurations? Also, do you recommend a target crown or a threaded w/ A2 birdcage? Sir, The barrel can be as large as you want under the handguard, making sure you leave enough space so the barrel does not come in contact with the float tube under sling tension. The exposed portion of the barrel has te be of thsame diameter of the issued M16a2 (.750") Best regards, Sights |

In service rifle division the trigger has to be of the same mechanical configuration of the issued M16 A2 or A1. As these rifles were issued with two stage triggers, the same is required for national match service rifles. The rules allow for modifications or parts replacements to the trigger components to allow for a minimum 4-1/2 pound trigger pull, using the two stage configuration. Any single stage triggers would be considered a deviation from this requirement and would result in a DQ of the rifle. Best regards, Sights |

Never have seen the NM specs. either. What TM is that 458 |
