Thinking of building a CMP M16A2 rifle, and need some advice on the guidelines for a CMP rifle.

Specifically,

should I go for a 20" or 16" barrel, and what profile?
Is it worth getting a freefloat sleeve for the standard A2 handguards?
Is there a legal stock other than the A2 stock?
What advantages does a hooded rear sight aperature have over a standard one?
What kind of triggers are legal (2 stg vs 1 stg)?
Do I have to use the original plastic pistol grip?

Thanks!

Sir,
If I may, I am an National Match Armorer and do so under contract for the CMP, I will try to assist you:

20'' Barrel is required (16" are not allowed in competition)
Service Rifle Freefloat front handguard assembly is a must, or you will not be able to attain the desired accuracy.
A2 stock is the standard but the original A1 stock is also allowed. No collapsable stocks are allowed.
Hooded NM rear sights are best as they cut glare and are easier to use at distance.
2 stage only.(national match triggers are best) No single stage triggers are allowed in service rifle division.
The original pistol grip A2 is required.

Best regards,

Sights

Does the 20" barrel have to be any specific profile?

Or am I free to choose between heavy and bull barrel configurations? Also, do you recommend a target crown or a threaded w/ A2 birdcage?

Sir,

The barrel can be as large as you want under the handguard, making sure you leave enough space so the barrel does not come in contact with the float tube under sling tension. The exposed portion of the barrel has te be of thsame diameter of the issued M16a2 (.750")

under the handguards the barrel can as fat as you want. outside apperance rifle must look like a m16a2.

I always thought it was a 4.5 min trigger pull. did not matter if single stage or 2 stage.

Sir,
I gather you are asking about the trigger style. In service rifle division the trigger has to be of the same mechanical configuration of the issued M16 A2 or A1. As these rifles were issued with two stage triggers, the same is required for national match service rifles. The rules allow for modifications or parts replacements to the trigger components to allow for a minimum 4-1/2 pound trigger pull, using the two stage configuration. Any single stage triggers would be considered a deviation from this requirement and would result in a DQ of the rifle.

Best regards,

Sights

Does the free floated handguards have to be the plastic A2 handguards, or will any free float tube work?

From 1975 to 2002, never did see a two stage M16.  Never have seen the NM specs. either.

M16a2 and M16a1 Use a single stage trigger. M1 garand and M14 use a 2 stage. trigger does not have to match as everyone puts a 2 stage in a ar-15.

M16a2 does not have a NM build sheet. the M14 does. or I've never herd of one when I was playing the game.

CMP rules for rifle only require minimum trigger pull of 4.5 lbs. You can use either single or two stage trigger.

6.1.1 General Service Rifle Requirements
All service rif es must comply with these requirements:
(1) Trigger Pull: Must be at least 4.5 pounds.
(2) Stocks: Must be standard military-issue wood or synthetic material stocks
or similar stocks of commercial manufacture.
(3) Gas system: Must be fully operational.
(4) Front and rear sights: Must be of U.S. Army design (either service or
match). Rear sight aperture openings must be round. Front sights must
have square-topped posts.
6.1.2 Service Rifl e Modifi cations
No modifi cations or alterations to the service rifl e are permitted except modifi -
cations or alterations that are specifi cally permitted by these rules. Modifi cations
described in this rule do not apply to As-Issued Military Rifl es defi ned in
Rule 6.3. Specifi c features or modifi cations that are permitted or prohibited on
Service Rifl es are:
(1) No alteration or modifi cation may change the external confi guration of the
rifl e.
(2) Rear sight windage and elevation adjustments may be modifi ed to allow
fi ner adjustments.
(3) The dimensions of the rear sight aperture (internal diameter) and the front
sight post (width) may vary from standard military dimensions. The rear
sight aperture may have a fi xed, non-adjustable aperture insert. A corrective
lens may be inserted in the rear sight hood. The rear sight hood
diameter may not be longer than 0.70” or larger than 0.50” in diameter.
(4) Internal modifi cations may be made to improve functioning and accuracy.
A special match barrel may be installed. Synthetic materials may be applied
to the interior of the stock to improve the bedding. No modifi cation
may interfere with the original functioning of the rifl e and its safety devices.
(5) Stocks may have any color. Metals may have any fi nish. Metal components
may be either steel or aluminum alloy.
(6) The application of a manufacturer’s mark, service identifi cation or other
similar branding is permitted and does not constitute a prohibited alteration
to the exterior dimensions of the rifl e.
(7) Permanent non-slip surface fi nishes may not be added to the rifl e, but
spray adhesives may be used on the rifl e.
