PSA just put their 1/7 ptac uppers with BCG on sale for $290 with free shipping. I purchased a $100 gift card from them for $90 the other day and used that (should have done $300).  I had a 20% off coupon for a complete ATI composite lower at another vendor so that was $104 shipped. My FFL already is holding a few things for me and charges a flat rate, so no additional cost for the transfer on this lower.

So $280 delivered for the upper plus $105.54 total for the lower delivered to my hands.

$384.54 Total. Even with Mag that is under $400.

Now I know the lower is not as proven as Aluminum and may be just for plinking....BUT it is neat to see someone can buy all new stuff and have it delivered to their hands for under $400. Not sure what my long term plans are for it...but not like there is any chance of me loosing money on it if I decided to sell it one day. Prices have become pretty darn amazing. I just got myself a FN Hammer forged barrel midlength 16' with a high quality BCG and 7075 receiver extension and good quality forged lower for about $550 and just built a similar one for my son for about $525. Glad I waited till now to mess with AR's. Only wanted one for me and one for my son. But the $384 one was a fun just to see it could be done. May convert it to .22 or something...still not sure.

I think he used the gift card to make it $299 -

"I purchased a $100 gift card from them for $90 the other day and used that (should have done $300)"

or

They are out of stock already..

Even the ones for $399 are not such a bad deal right now.

I have tried to spec out an upper and just can't beat the Ptac for the price is at least $50 cheaper than I can put one together.

I know the argument is you can build a better one, yes but I still can't get the parts that cheap. Take off the barrel striped and sell it for 80-90 shipped and have  a good base build for a rifle for $200 all you loking for is a barrel. Even upgrade the BCG if you have to for 25-40$

I can't figure a better budget build than starting with a PTAC.

Other than that

Blem upper build kit $71 shipped PSA

BCG Aim $100 caan save 10 here but why.

CH $15

Gas Block/FSB $25-30

Gas Tube $15

=$231 without a barrel and they are $100 min.

I have a PSA lower with a chiappa upper that is asking for a 5.56 upper.

I should have got the 399 6.8 or I might wait and get this to go on it.

Interesting. I just came to the realization that my upper is going to cost me nearly $1200. So about $1600 before optics for the complete weapon.

Im in the same boat as you, but at least I am getting what I want and know that I am putting good parts into the weapon system.  Good for people to do it on the cheap, although that is not what I am looking for.

While I am not thinking the $384 ptac and polymer gun will be ready to go to war...I do think the $550 ones should be just as durable and reliable as any AR ar out there. More of a Chevy cobalt v fancy Caddy kind of comparison. My interest in the other two was reliable, durable and accurate weapons.Nothing more and nothing less.  Fancy stuff beyond that is of no value to me, but easy to see how it could get add up quick if you want all the fancy bells and whistles. I don't see to many Caddy owners wishing the wishing they got a Cobalt instead...but they do serve their primary function just as well. But, yeah...the $384 Ar is what it is. I will try and post a pic when it goes together.

Spec out one with a Daniel Defense barrel earlier today in the $650-$700 range. I have some AR uppers that cost me over a 1k  and some as little as $250 "Colt m16a1" both function with no problems.

The money not counting optics is going to getting the group size down,  in most cases.
I have helped friends build guns that functioned fine and have seen people who bought name brand upper tier ARs and had to send them back o be fixed.
Look at the material specs and make sure they are up to par, this is what matters the most for a basic quality reliable ar15. Remember that PSA hammer barrels are made by FN, they are considered by most as an upper tier manufacturer.
Somehow I don't think the military are carrying 1k+ uppers into battle, something about cheapest contractor that meets mil-spec requirements, keeps popping into my head.

I say way cool.  I am waiting on the parts for my second sub $500 build.  I just like a basic open sight rifle and ARs are a fantastic value when an sks costs $350 these days.

It is cool. I wasn't trying to disparage the OP in any way by saying my build was going to cost more money. I keep telling myself I am going to do a "cheap build" one of these days, but so far it hasn't happened. Seems like the going rate at the store for a 16" M4 style carbine with very basic furniture is now $1000, I swear you could build one better/cheaper if that was your goal. Some crazy Black Friday deals this year too.

Some people have spent more than $384 on a freakin' QUAD RAIL, which I've always thought was a colossal waste of money, but to each his own.

I am a fan of simple and don't get the highly built up AR thing, but some people love them. I once went through a 10/22 "phase". Fluted barrels, fancy stocks and junk like that. One day I picked up a nice older walnut stocked bone stock 10/22 and fell in love all over again. Now it is my only 10/22 and such a better rifle.....often less is more. If I "bond" with it I will most likely swap out the plastic receiver for a forged one as that is the only thing on this that I feel may not be of solid quality.
