I built my own. As far as our Nazi type gun laws we have to abide by, there are several things you need to know/follow.
1) folding and collapsible stocks are illegal. I bought a carbine buffer tube and adjustable stock at a gun show, set the length and pinned it myself
2) not sure about this but I believe just about every state requires a rifle barrel to be at least 16" but I do know that in NJ ANY muzzle devise on ANY length barrel needs to be pinned and welded
3) magazines can only hold 15 rounds. No reputable dealer is going to send a larger one to NJ. I bought a few 10 round mags and went to the local gun show (Oaks Gun Show in PA) and bought two 20 round Pmags and had them blocked and pinned (to hold only 15) by the vendor (Precision Firearms). Definitely build - Built is Beautiful

I bought the Pmags at the gun show in FDE for $19.00.  What you save in the price will more than pay for your admission. Now that I think about it, the stock, buffer tube and mags all came from Precision Firearms. The have a web site too.

There are a lot of parts to buy with a lot of personal decisions to make. Your best bet is research, research and then more research.
Here is a good site for finding the lowest prices though.

Because they are a known quantity, can be found at outstanding prices and can easily be mod'ed to accommodate changes in preferences/use as you gain more experience.

If you know exactly what you want and can't find it OTS, then build one, otherwise the Colt is hard to beat.
