I have been thinking about building a 6.8 upper. How long will it take for big name brands to start pumping out 6.8 SPC ammo? How much do you think it will sell for?

Also, what parts are and aren't compatible with a standard 6.8 upper? I plan to use a Yankee Hill free float forearm, will this not work with a 6.8 upper for any reason?

Thanks!

The last word I heard was June for both magazines and ammunition.  Go to www.midwayusa.com and search for 6.8 spc ammo for prices and their expected date of arrival.

AFAIK, all parts are standard besides bolt and barrel.  You may need larger/reshaped M4 feed ramps.  You will need a .277" or larger muzzle attachment (if any), obviously.

Ammo will start at about $15-$18 per box of 20, about the same as match grade .308.

Once brass is shipping, you'll be able to load it for as little as $0.15/rnd if you keep your brass.

If you read the past few month's SOF magazine, you will see alot of coverage's on the 6.8 SPC. I have expressed my concerns over other memebers jumping to it prematurely already on this ammo due to the fact it is un-proven so far. No one knows whether the ammo will be reliable in an AR based rifle.

In the SOF magazine, there are some test results that differs from the current FAQ's on the 6.5 in AR15.com so far. (I can scan the articles next week if you guys would like)

With a small quantity of Remington factory loaded 6.8 by 43 mm ammunition, I began testing two of the 6.8mm components. These were the SPR and the Recce Rifle with the A.R.M.S. Mid-Length S.I.R. System. For the informal shooting, an Aimpoint Comp M2 was mounted on a 16.5-inch Recce Rifle. This included close-quarter battle (CQB) firing drills in addition to full automatic burst fire. Only 27 rounds of 6.8mm ammunition could be loaded into our pre-production sample PRI magazine, and a  number of failure to feed were experienced. When we tried a standard M16 30-round (25round in a 6.8mm), both rifles ran perfect on semi- and full-automatic.

(Soldier of Fortune magazine, Apr 2004.pg, 69, 77)

Recce rifle is a Navy Special Warefare Command Mk-12 Variant on the existing MK12 M16 (M4) lower.

The magazine areticles do mention the 6.8 being better than all other rounds tested including the 6.5 Grendel, but never mentions why.  Also the slower velocity of the SPC cartridge will increase bore life from the testing.

Are they saying they could fit 25 rounds of 6.8 in a USGI M16 magazine?

What are they smoking?  I load 10 rounds of 6.8 into a USGI M16 mag and it won't even fit into the magazine well anymore.

EDIT: anyone know if their uppers had the "6.8-improved" M4 feedramps?
