Spend 5 or 6 hours reading about what everyone else messed up during their first build, avoid those mistakes.
Read the posts about who's lower was out of spec and which vendors deliver 6 months late.
Learn as much as you can before you start buying.
If possible, shoot a buddy's AR or rent one at the range and get an idea of what you like, otherwise you end up with a box full of parts you changed your mind about.
If you think you are doing it wrong, ask before you break it.
