Hello, I'm pretty new to the whole AR scene, so if these questions are pretty basic then I'm sorry!  I recently purchased my lower, and it is a Para USA.  My first question is, on the lower, it says "multi caliber," does that mean I can pick any caliber I want dependent on which upper kit I decide to buy?  I was just going to go with a basic 223 build for my first one, but I have recently decided I may want to do a larger caliber so I can take it deer hunting with me.  My last question is that I have been looking for an upper kit to buy, and it seems that just about everywhere says that they are sold out on their site, or that shipping will take 4-6 weeks.  Is this pretty standard? I'm guessing calling a company would be better for finding out what they have in stock since some companies don't like to update their online inventory.

Thanks for looking, and any help will be greatly appreciated!

You will want to do a lot of reading in the pinned topics here in the AR variants section about the caliber you with to use.

You might consider assembling your own rather than buying a kit. Price out the pieces and you might opt to go that rout rather than waiting, waiting and waiting for the company to assemble it for you.

Parts are easier to come by than a kit most of the time.

I was going to buy a kit just because I'm not really sure about exactly what pieces I need.  But can I built a 6.8spc with the lower i bought?

If I order this kit, http://www.model1sales.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=279 , all I will need is the lower parts kit and a stock?

The AR lower has no influence on the caliber other than it must be a caliber that will function within the constraints of the magazine and action.
Instead of that M1S offering I would look at a kit from PSA.

I am not very familiar with the specifics with the 6.8, but like what someone said earlier, you can use an AR-15 lower and swap back & forth with a 223/556 upper and a 6.8 upper. Most would eventually assemble another stripped lower and have 2 complete rifles.

An upper is basically a stripped upper receiver, a few upper parts (forward assist, ejection port cover assembly), a barrel, bolt carrier group and a charging handle. Assembling an upper is about as simple as assembling a lower only it uses a couple of special tools (barrel wrench, torque wrench, upper receiver vice clamp). The torque wrench can be bought for $40 at a local auto parts store, used once and returned. A vice is needed, but everyone knows of someone that has a vice.

Watch the Brownells How to Build An AR-15 Video for free online or download it for free if you know how. You can buy it here. Once you watch those videos you'll probably feel confident about assembling it yourself. If watching those videos does not interest you then it would be best to buy one fully assembled.

I've had a 50% success rate with Model 1 Sales. They have a pretty long wait on their assembled weapons like most assemblers do.
