I am planning to build my own upper, hopefully. I plan to use a 16" post-ban lightweight barrel from Bushmaster. I also plan to put a CAR length YHM free float rail system on. However, the 'build your own upper' section of this site doesn't go into great detail on this subject...

How would the instructions follow if I were just to install the barrel, knock out the FSB and attach a YHM free floater? Woudl the armorer's wrench and action block still be required?

Thanks!

Headspacing?:)

Headspace is determined by the barrel extension, which is installed at the factory and headspaced to work with any mil-spec new bolt. Just screw that barrel nut on tight, line up a gas tube notch, and you're good to go!

First off, if you haven't yet bought the barrel, call Bushmaster (or Eagle Firearms) and ask them for a barrel without the FSB.  In their catalog Bushmaster encourages customers to call with special requests.  Knocking the pins out of the FSB is a total pain in the butt, and you end up with a barrel with holes in it where the pins were, and an unused FSB.

Then get yourself a nice gas block, like the YHM one with the flip-up front sight.  You still need the upper receiver vice block set for the upper.  Put the upper in the block and mount the barrel with the barrel nut that comes with the YHM forend using an armorer's wrench.  Gas block, forend+jam nut, and gas tube.  Or I suppose you could put the gas block on last.  Whatever.

Hope this helps.

Carbine, thats exactly what I was looking for, thanks!

I have not yet bought the barrel. My entire rifle right now is just a YHM solid rear sight...I am ordering more parts soon, I hope.

I am actually building the rifle using a YHM free float forearm rail system, so I guess i could just buy the package that comes with the flip up front sight/gas block. In fact I was deciding whether to just buy the kit and enjoy the front sight and the other goodies rather than just buy the tube itself. Thanks, you are a God!

I'll second the YHM gas block/front sight combo.  Very nice.

I'm actually looking at building another upper, and the ability to get a barrel without gas block or the holes for the taper pins is a great idea.  I'll have to give bushmaster a call.

Me too...I was actually going to order from Bushmaster anyway.
They are the only ones I know who carry a chrome-lined 4150 steel lightweight barrel.
