| I was toying with the notion of building a new SP-1 type AR using an unissued Colt Sp-1 upper assembly (the ones advertised in Shotgun news) and a modern post ban Colt or equivalent lower. Are there any headaches I should be aware of mating an old upper with a modern lower. I am basically trying to make an Sp-1 but do not want to spend 800.00-1000.00 for a beat to hell Sp-1. I figure I can build a new one now that the ban has expired for the same price or a little less. Trying to get as close as I can to the M-16A1 (without being full auto of course). Any advice? |

Check out these uppers. They have a 1-12 twist, but may be sort what you're looking for. Heard good things about them in other threads. Buffer Tech |

Joe, Im doing the same thing, I have a Orig SP-1, but Im also going to do a second clone I will have a local guy machine off the area around the mag release, and we are going to attemtp to drill out the front pivt pin to take the screw( If it dont work then I guess I will use a bushing or something), I think it will to much of a hastle around the rear of the receiver to mill off the reinforcement, so I will let that slide.... Good luck, and let us all know how it go's Anybody know where I can find a Delta Ring like that? |
| Just so you know M16s without the magazine fence did have normal take down pins up front. The magazine fencing that was not present was right around the magazine release. The upper portion that runs straight to the take down pin was in tact. Colt took the entire fencing off only on the SP1s (civilian rifles). Early M16s basically had only half of the fencing. Another difference in the early lowers was the reinforcement around the barrel extension (buffer tube) area on the lower receiver was not reinforced (less bulky in that area). It is your lower do to it whatever you want, just thought you might like to know |
Thanks for the info, I have built 2 A-1 clones with the pushpins and only the mag area mill'd away, I will be building a SP1 clone this time, all slab side, and no front pushpin... There are some AWESOME pictures posted by I think Tangent around here somwhere if you would like to see pics of the real thing... |
Birdcage (based on books and experience). The A1s I was issued in the Army ('83 to '86) had a birdcage with slots all the way around. The A2 closed the bottom slots to minimize dust signature when firing prone. Any current sources of A1 (not C7) uppers? Some posters say Brownells/RRA makes them, but others say they are really C7 or slick side (M16). I've got a pseudo A1 with a C7 upper. I'd like to make it correct someday if I can find a stripped A1 upper... |

CDNN has M16A! take offs with teardrops, traingualr handguards, bayo lug, fully cut birdcage , no CH or b, bc. They will throw in a buffer tube, buffer and (I think) stock for $399. Anyone know of a better deal? Will the A1 buffer tube fit the M16(not A1) stock (the one that doesn't have a trapdoor)? |
Yes; and I think the stocks that CDNN has were both early, and late(trapdoor types), so if you get one, call in the order, and state your preference. Right now, with throwing in a complete stock Assembly. that $399 price looks pretty good. Before that, it was a little on the high side. For the record, all rifle buffer tubes are exactly the same, right through to the current A2 models. |
Very nice! |
