Hi, I'm new here, and I had a question about the paint on the tips of M855, M856 and .50BMG cartridges.

Does anyone know what type of paint it is? (enamel, acrylic, etc) Or know of a suitable paint for marking the tips of bullets?

Thanks.

Testors model paint works well, though it's not as wear-resistant as the stuff the gov uses.

Just run a party mix, 1 M193 alternating with M855.  The ballistics are not all that different at urban-bugout ranges.  You might not have the luxury of a mag change to suit to type of zombie.

I've run XM855 throught the polisher, and the green survives just fine.

Testors is optimized for sticking to polystyrene, so it won't stick as well to metal.  You might try nail polish-"real" colors are rather popular where I am right now, so I can get blue, red, green, yellow, orange and purple nail polish for pretty much dirt cheap at the grocery store's cosmetics section.  From the ingredients lists, this stuff is pretty much "nitrocellulose lacquer", a staple in marking and sealing ammunition, so it should work pretty well.

JHill: As of now I put green tape on the bottom of my 'penetrator' mags
Neat idea, unfortunatly I dont have many magazines yet, and so I dont have the luxury of different magazines for different ammo. (I just started with AR-15s)

Tromatic: Just run a party mix, 1 M193 alternating with M855. The ballistics are not all that different at urban-bugout ranges.
I mostly shoot for fun, but at a distance (100-200m), or while hunting. Heh, so far its a 'bit' expensive for ammo, so I'm not firing too much at a time (I'm also planning on reloading, and I've already sighted my BDC scope to the SS109).
I've run XM855 throught the polisher, and the green survives just fine.
Thats good to know the paint wont polish off, I'm trying to find some pulled SS109 tips, but so far all I've seen (at sensable prices) is new production, and those are not painted.

GHPorter: You might try nail polish-"real" colors
I'll have to stop by the store and pick up some nail polishes to try, are there and specific brands you've had luk with, or just whatever is easiest on the wallet?

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Sorry, I was looking at a bottle of Revlon nail polish and for some reason thought model and testors.  Thinned nail polish makes a very fine neck and primer sealant, too.

For 50BMG bullets I use a piece of cardboard/plastic with a small hole drilled it it, place it on the bullet and spray paint it black. Looks good and wont come off easily. HTH

I'm confused here too, what is the point of painting your bullets?

So he can sell an un-named round of ammo as M855 or AP.
Although I am kidding, I hope I'm wrong.

I've found that the "N.Y.C." brand has both "real colors" and a decent price-about $1 a 0.45 fl oz bottle.  I've also found that beauty supply houses (such as Sally Beauty Supply here) have tiny bottles of polish (about 0.1 oz, and this line includes "real colors") along with honest and for truly nail polish thinner, which is better than acetone or model paint thinner for this purpose.

I would think it would help keep one's 55 grain loads separated from one's 62 grain loads, even if you package and label everything very well...  And what about other bullet weights?  Color coding is a Good Thing®.

I wonder about the paint b/c the only 'M855' I own is Radway and Adcom--thus wanting to paint the tips.

pic example of mags:

forgot color codes:

Green--M855 equiv.
Red--all tracers
Blue--OTM
None--M193 Equiv.

OK, makes sense to me now....

I did it a while ago.  I put the rounds on strippers and placed them so just the bullets were out past the edge of the table.  I used basic water based craft paint from WalMart that was thinned a little bit with more water.  It looks decent and what I still have left hasn't worn off at all.

As for painting it, I can tell the difference by looking at the tip - the M855 is pointier than the M-193, but it's easier to ID for a range trip or whatever.

Please "bare" with my ignorance...... But what is "OTM" (your blue code)? Inquiring Bears want to know! Thanks.

Exactly--Open Tip Match.  It is my 'accurate loads'.  I just chose blue--has nothing to do w/ 'thin blue line' or any thing else.

The tracers in a single mag--for just in case--never know when you need to pull a 'Bob the Nailer' like in Blacklight.

To Mike (mvician), tikkafan, ar15gnocchi, and anyone else wondering why I  want to paint bullet tips: GHPorter and JHill are correct, its so I can keep my 62gr loads seperate. I do have a can of Radway Green and some ADCOM M855 that I'd like to mark, as I got some M193 ammo when I bought the rifle.
Other than that, I was thinking of marking other ammunitions I use for hunting, like different color codes for different weights (almost a color band system, like on electrical resistors).

Thanks again for the help and suggestions.

Cool. Try to post as much information as you can in the 1st post so there are no
misconceptions. Welcome to the site.
