I have the shorty AK version and wondering if I should (can) switch to a mini-Y comp.  Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I think I can speak for most here on ARFcom when I say the Mini Y is most likely the worst muzzle device ever designed... Why not change out your AK brake for a nice Phantom or Vortex or even an A2 birdcage?  ADCO could do the job in a matter of a week or so...

Both those brakes are "ear blasters".    The mini-y  and AK brakes are very effective at reducing muzzle climb,  but unless your firing full-auto it shouldn't matter with an AR.

I had a Phantom FH put on by Adco and they really stand behind their work.

Ditto, Cross-Steel's comments, both are ear busters, follow Dark Star's advice.......

Ya might even want to consider having some weight taken off the heavy barrel Bushmaster puts on the shorty AK versions ARs, (while great for full-auto, sustained fire, it's awfully heavy in a SA)

+1

why keep the break when you can have a FH--its recoil is negligable w/ or w/ out the break

Replace it with a Phantom 5C1 or 5C2 - skip getting the Mini-y unless your's is full-auto and you like doing mag dumps.

AK Muzzle Brake vs. Mini Y Comp

They both suck.......

I really like my Mini Y-Comp. The loud noise can be dampened by using ear plugs and your fine, even in our indoor range. As for those who claim that there isn't a difference in recoil, there is a difference. With the Y-Comp you can fire much faster and continue to be on target. I love mine and have never seen the point as to why a range gun needs a Flash Hider.

Heck I really do not see the point as to why I paid $120 for a LaRue Aimpoint Mount and $360 for an Aimpoint when all I do is just take it too the range. Heck, the mount didn't even keep zero after continued remounting and such. I have to leave it on the gun and tighten the screw. I also do not see why I paid $120 for a BUIS and $50 for a forward grip. All well, I guess I caught the bug and thought "I needed it" for when? All well I do not know for when, as I was going to say invasion or zombies, but that will never happen. I was also going to say for when I do my tactical drills, but alas I am only 16 and do not do those either. Was I going to say for home defense? No, don't think so because I doubt I'll need to use a gun to expell someone from my house.

So why did I get the stuff? I guess, honestly, because I thought I could be cool. I thought I could have a "cool" tactical gun. I guess it was just an outlet for me, just as some kids my age do drugs, I turned to the enjoyable gun hobby.

I like my Y-Comp, try both and see what YOU like. I guess what I was trying to say is that do you really need a Flash Hider (FH), or do all you do is range work and enjoy mag dumps like I do. If its the latter, then I would recomend the Y-Comp. If its the former then get a FH.

Please be safe and enjoy this wonderful entertainment!

That is one of the "dumber" (to put it nicely) things I have seen on ARFCOM since I have been lurking for about a year......

I do not understand your thinking in the least. Please, if you are willing explain to me why I(I) (read above post to yours please) need nor even want to replace my Mini Y-Comp?

Loud, obnoxious, ugly....  I went out shooting with a friend of mine & he crouched left/5 to spot for me...  Not only did it deafen him, but it blew sand into his face & the glass on my binocs, plus, literally blew his hat off his head.  I couldn't even hunt (properly) with that damn break.  Even one shot would ring my noggin'.  Thought that someone took an ice-pick to my eardrum.  Can't hunt with muffs........
