Hey guys I need a little help.  I'm a police officer and I'm researching patrol rifles for me and a couple of other officers.  We have to go through our local supplier in order to get the city to agree to front the officer's the money and do payroll deduction.  He can't get Colts because he's not a LE distributor.  So he has a Bushmaster Homeland Defender which looked like a nice rifle.  I was wondering if anyone knew if there was anything different on that rifle from their standard patrolman other than the quad rails, and the cute little logo on the receiver.  The other rifles that he has and can get readily are the Smith & Wesson and Armalite.

The Smith and the Armalite were pretty close in price, but the Bushmaster was a couple hundred more.  Would the Bushmaster be worth the added price over the other 2?  We would more than likely be adding at least one rail for a tac light and maybe a forward grip.

We have to make up our minds by next week, so I'm reaching out to those of you who know more about these rifles than I do.

Thanks in advance

IMO Stag usually puts together a nice rifle. The SW AR's are made by stag so the only difference is the name on the side of the gun. Armalite are OK too. Of the choices you have Id personally got with the SW T model Ar15 which has the railed forend and flip up Troy iron sights which are very nice.

The only way you can get the front money is to go through ONE paticular dealer? That doesnt sound too good. What if you could get a group discount by going with a authorized Colt LE dealer?

The rifles that comes with railed forends might be a good idea if you have a bunch of guys who dont really know what they are looking at, and you can control what goes onto the rifles. Otherwise you might see some UTG type junk showing up.

i'd probably consider the SW, the MP15T if you prefer its features, but if not, then the std A3 w/ the Troy rear sight

the bushy HD is a tad expensive for what it is imo (or what it isnt)--its $1200 for a base line AR w/ a nice, extra logo, cheap(er) YHM FF tube (thats not really needed on a non-accurized rifle imo), and hogue grip

you can get the SW MP15T w/ top quality Troy FF tube, mil-spec buffer tube, rear and front flip down BUISs, and pay $15 for a hogue grip (if you want it)

if not, i'd just opt for a baseline AR (from either bushy, SW, or armalite), and customize as you want

FWIW: i'm NOT a LEO, and my local PD has colts

I was leaning towards the Smith as well.  Reference going through our local dealer though it's basically so Chief can say to the city that we would be supporting our one of our local businesses.  He's offered to match the local LE distributors price on everything but the Colt.

We looked at the Stag, and if I was buying it just for myself and had to plop the money down right there for it that's probably what I'd go with.  The Chief looked at it and did not like it at all, so Stags out.

Also, I saw a S&W rifle armorers class a couple weeks ago and it was geared towards their rifle.  How much different is the operating system in the Smith verses the standard AR?  We are sending an officer to Colt Armorers class, would he still be able to work on these rifles?

Most AR parts are pretty much standardized so there really wont be an issue with sending someone to the Colt class.

Stag makes the MP15 for SW. IMO its a pretty nice deal for what you get.

Can he get LMT? They will sell complete rifles to LEO.

Whats the cost? Down in Florida  LEO gets BM at 825-850 out the door. I would call BM direct and see what they can do.

BM direct or LMT direct.  LE price for basic LMT w/ SOPMOD is just under 1k delivered.  If u have 2 stick to ur choices I would go Armalite.  Smith is supposedly no longer made by CMT.  Probably all parts are CMT (good thing) but put togeter by Smith.

I think when I asked for quotes from Noveske and LMT they were pretty close.  Is one any better than the other?
