I'm looking to make a USMC M16A4 clone from a Bushmaster AR. Right now, my only AR is a Bushmaster 20" A2. In order to get an M16A4 clone, would I be better off getting just a Flat-Top Upper Reciever and put it on my A2 Lower Reciver or should I just save up to buy a whole new complete rifle? I figure that buying just the Upper Reciever will be cheaper but buying a whole new rifle will make for two guns instead of just one in a SHTF situation.

Well,as you said,it would be cheaper to by the upper. But hell,I'm a sucker for getting a new gun.No matter what, two guns is always better than one.

It doesnt matter what lower, as long as it has the full butt-stock.

Describe your A2 upper, I have an A4-gery upper I could swap you for it. Is your barrel 1/7 gov't profile w/ flash suppressor, bayo lug?

Thank you for the offer but I would rather keep my A2 Upper. It just has that sentimental value being my first AR.

Any way, my A2 Upper is 1/9" profile with flash suppressor and bayo lug.

Just buy a new upper if you're going to be keeping the A2.  The set up of your lower will be the same on both so it doesnt really warrant a whole new lower.

Thats the benefit of the AR system - modularity.

other than the barrel twist of 1/9 vs the more authentic 1/7, (and adding a R-BUIS) this is a great A4gery

Nice, comes with everything you need.  But, it is a Heavy Bbl.  I don't know if you've ever lugged around an HBAR 20"er.  It might get a little uncomfortable.

Plus, I'm almost positive the MC doesn't issue BUIS's on ACOG equipped rifles...

Make sure you specify 1/7 twist, most Bushies will come standard 1/9.

Is the rail system standard on the A4?

Do the military's M4's have a 1/7 twist?

After reading the ammo oracle I now know that 1/7 stabilizes heavier bullets, but isn't optimal for the lighter bullets.  Bushmaster's website states all their barrels come with 1/9 twist to accomodate the large majority of ammo.

Actually, my current 20" is an HBAR. I'm trying to get it cut down to a government profile soon.

What makes you think it is not optimal for lighter bullets?
