| How do CMMG barrels compare with Bushmaster barrels? I'm considering getting a new barrel soon, and I noticed CMMG makes 4150 1/7 barrels, but I haven't heard anything about them before. Their barrels seem to be a little more expensive than a Bushy but still cheaper than a Colt. Are they worth the extra price? Anybody, know if they have the M4 extended ramps? Thanks. |

I haven't ordered any of the cmmg barrels, but if you don't get many replies here, just email cmmg inc. and ask them. [email protected] (I have there business card lying around). |

They don't "make" barrels, they sell them. Depending on the particular one you want, you'll likely either wind up with a LMT product (very good, mil-spec) or a DPMS if you order from CMMG. Bushmaster will also be a quality product. I don't thing you'd go wrong with either. |

I have a DPMS BBl that I bought from CMMG...works great...I don't have it infront of me, but I believe it has the M4 feed ramps. I bought the 14.5 M4 1/7 chrome lined with the Miculek break on it...the sucker is load as f*ck however zero recoil or muzzle rise . I haven't bothered to shoot for group soda cans at 75-100 yds no prob...I feel bad for near by shooters though...I'll glady pawn it off to you for the price or swap of a BM superlite with a f/s come sept |
I own one of the chrome-lined 1/7, 16" pre-ban M4 uppers (complete w/ b/bc/ch), YES they have the "feed-ramp" cuts and they shoot very well IMO. This is the upper which has my ARMs #45C mounted on it and topped w/ an Aimpoint ML2, settin on an old Colt Sporter lower, it's the one which is my favorite SHTF rifle. It shoots rounds from 45 grn. HP to 77 grn. SMKs or OTMS with equal precision and with loads it likes shoots MOA to 1.5 MOA at 100 yards. Mike |

If you want a 14.5" or 16" M4 profiled barrel made from 4150 steel, fully chromed lined, 1/7 twist you basically have 4 options that I know of. Colt - Nice barrel but very expensive and not always easy to find. LMT - Just as nice as the Colt but not as expensive but still more then the next two options BM - Nice but no M4 feedcuts and no parkerizing under the FSB if that matters to you CMMG\DPMS - The CMMG barrel is specially made by DPMS for CMMG. Only real down side it the Cast FSB. I originally bought the BM but then sold it and got the LMT |

I installed one of the cmmg 1/7 M4 barrels on a n.o.s. M16a1 upper. The barrel impressed me with the quality of the finish, etc. when compared to Colt and BM ones on hand. What is up with the negative impressions regarding "cast" FSB's?. We all willingly throw down big bucks for folding sight gadgets that cannot reasonably be considered as durable as solid, cast steel. IIRC, Colt is casting now because they could not get forgings to look as "nice" as customer expectations. Casting, or more correctly "Investment Casting", can produce a durable product. Back to the cmmg 1/7 barrel. The gas tube pin tapped in nicely. Rear sight windage "zero'd" with only 3 licks away from mechanical center. I was more concerned with function testing and dumping some full 20's while testing, and made no notes regarding the accuracy while burning 90 rounds of IMI M855 without problems of any kind. The chrome lining made cleanup a breeze. VERY NICE weight/balance/handling with the lighter barrel profile under the handguard. Only about an ounce heavier than my old CAR w/ the original 1/12 "pencil" barrel. Paladin http://home1.gte.net/res07evx/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/110-1024_img.jpg |
When did LMT start parkerizing under the front sight base? None of their products that I have seen were that way. |
Don't know if they do or don't but will be finding out soon enough as I'll need to remove my FSB to install a DD FF. I personally don't think it's that big of an issue but some do so I thought I'd mention it. If I find out for sure that LMT is the same way, I will make sure to mention it next time this subject comes up. Anybody know if they DPMS\CMMG is parkerized under the FSB or is that just a Colt thing?
I won't swear to it but I seem to recall having the option of either 14.5" or 16" when I got mine. Either way they are somewhat rare. I bought the one I had from Eagle Firearms and I noticed recently Pete@Legal Transfers had some 14.5"'s |
Yes - Either both the barrel and upper should have the M4 feedcuts or neither. Mixing these up will potentially cause you problems. |
This is totally false. Colt has always, and continues to use forgings exclusively. More than one member here has had a chunk taken out of their cast FSB or had it broken off completely under an impact. Impacts are where castings just don't have anywhere near the strength of a forged part. -Troy |

I have to give it up to CMMG, I purchased a M4 1/7 twist 14.5" upper with phantom at a local gun show and I'll be the first to say, "you won't find a better bunch of guys!". While I haven't got the chance to shoot the upper as it is part of my after september rifle, the fit, finish and quality is top notch. The upper has M4 feed ramps, 1/7 Twist, 4150 steel, chrome lined and it's sweet Jerad |
Thanks for your input, Troy. I apologize for repeating what I KNOW I read somewhere, without having the reference to attribute my statement to. So I just got off the phone with Colt customer service. The kind lady at first told me, "Yes, at some time in the past, they used CAST front sight bases". When I pressed her for a date, or time frame, she double checked, and then replied "No, they have always been forged." So I got double-talk about this issue, today at 10 am central, straight from the horse's mouth. Paladin |
