I purchased a buttstock removal tool today and it is not engaging the notches correctly.  It is from my local shop but is from Brownells (made by rock river).  It is not locking into all three prongs and every attempt to turn the nut results in it poping off and scratching the nut.  Is their some sort of trick i need to know or is the wrench most likely bunk?  Any help wood be fantastic.

Thanks

Your castle nut may be bunk.  What are the particulars, make, model, etc.....

You can remove a castle nut with a drift punch and a very small hammer.  I only recently purchased the proper wrench and have only used it once.  You can also "unstake" a castle nut with a center punch and some finesse.

Castle nuts are cheap.

The castle nut is a stock Stag.  Stag complete lower.  i have it on a vise block.  You think i can simply use a punch and knock it loose? Then replace the castle nut.

Thanks by the way earp

The real problem is that the tool is not lining up in the grooves correctly.  I might just end up going to the local shop and have them do it for me.  I feel like a complete dumb ass.

Those special wrenches don't always fit!!! Dude just use a punch and knock it loose, as someone else said castle nuts are cheep and you can get one that matches your wrench. Good luck

Are you trying to fit it directly over your castle nut? If you are it might not work. Try starting it back towards the threading and sliding it forward to fit the grooves.
