so for my first build Im leaning towards a complete up because of all the hassale with buying tools such as clamps, wrenches, and blocks along with man hours with school closing soon my homework is through the roof. I figured the cost of building vs buying a complete upper and its close to 150 bucks more to build. I know if in the future I want to build an upper I will have to tools but I don't live in a house and my apartment is small and limited space.

SO with that said I was looking at a CMMG upper from MI for $480 it comes with a CH and BCG. all mil spec i think.  My question is, the BCG is it a FA carrier or semi? I know they make good stuff but this build is more mil spec than civies ARs.  What are your opinions on this upper is it worth it or should I build?  o by the way I already have a upper reciever, CH, delta ring, A2 FH, BUIS, Quad rail. should I sell all but the BUIS and quad rail and buy the  complete upper or the other I know I can switch the BCG if I want just think this is easier and less stress.

P.S. its pretty hard to find a mid length gas lube by the way.

clamps?
got a friend with a vice?
Your only down a barrel and bcg for the money of a complete upper You could get an upper action block and a NICE barrel and bcg most are full auto style now. I think the cmmg carriers are semi auto
Is it a dropo in quadrail? if it's free float youd pretty much have to reassemble the upper anyway unless it just works with milspec barrel nut.

Post in your Hometown forum and see if anyone lives close by with the necessary tools. Chances are you could build a rifle for the cost of a 12 pack.

My experience with CMMG is so bad that I do not even want to post it here. It is the worst company of any company I have ever dealt with. When you send a rifle in that is having severe problems with factory ammunition and they will not take the time to diagnose the problem and send it back just the way you sent it it, I would say they are on the bottom of the quality list. I have two armalites and one dpms and will never stray again. One of the signs of a good company is when you have problems they take care of you and correct the issues. Not with them. Like I said buy the best and leave the second rate ar15's to someone else. As a shooter for over 30 years i diagnosed the problem and even tried to get them to check the throating on the chamber. No luck. No cooperation and a very rude customer service rep.

I have a CMMG lower and I like it.  I HAD a CMMG barrel and didn't like it.  It wouldn't function with a lot of different types of ammo.  I personally think that the chamber was too tight.

I have no problem with most CMMG stuff but won't use their barrels and recommend you do the same.

While I've had pretty good results with later CMMG gear, I would certainly invest in an action block and armoprers wrench.
AR's are easy to build. Minimum of tools are required.
You can buy a decent upper receiver, pick the barrel and BCG you want. Add a hand guard and you have everything you wanted in your upper.

So far as CMMG chambers being out of spec, they are now test fired with M855 before leaving the factory.

I picked up a complete CMMG SPR upper last year. Part of the reason I bought it was because of the customer service. It was supposed to be great and the quality of their stuff was better than most. Ran into a problem when I shot 2 different 55gr loads and the pattern at 50 yards looked like a shotgun blast. the upper was sent back, they did some testing at their 60 yard range, sent back a couple targets and said close enough. Supposedly no changes were made to the upper by them. I would have expected a bit more from a top notch customer service department.

Enough about the bitchin....I set up 7 different factory loads and even the horrible rounds from the first test ran about 2-3" at 100 yards. 2 loads ran at 1".

Bottom line is their hardware is fine but service is not what I expected.

OK so when were the bad chambers around?   I have a CMMG 18" middy upper that has never had a round through it in storage someplace in the states. It is about 3-4 years old I figure, and I don't want to buy a bunch of goodies and have them waiting to find out she is a turd.

I don't know if all their rifles had bad chambers or if it was just a few.  I just was unhappy with their response when I emailed them about it. Basically, they didn't care.  I think I bought my CMMG barrel in 2005 IIRC.

I do like the CMMG lower that I have.

I have some STAG uppers on acouple rifles and have been very happy with them.

I purchased one of CMMG's complete midlength uppers from AIM back in 2008 when they were selling for $525 or so with B/BC/CH. It has worked flawlessly now through over 3,000 rounds of steel case, commerical brass, and mil-spec ammo. I also qualified "Rifleman" with it my first Appleseed using Monarch steel case. I have no complaints.

My CMMG lower has a great finish, but it unfirtunately has a tight magwell. Hundreds of mag changes have "broken" it in, so to speak, but it's still more awkward than my DPMS and S&W lowers.

I bought a complete CMMG 16" medium-contour, mid-length. 1:7, chrome-lined A3 upper with M16-type BCG early in 2010. It functioned fine but accuracy was not great with M855, 3" to 4" at 50 yds. I tried two other kinds; PRVI 75gr OTM and 62gr handloads. Both produced excellent accuracy, about 1" or less. That was a big relief. :) I can shoot it better than that but through no fault of CMMG, my lower has an awful trigger. My next step is to put a real trigger set in it and see what I can really do with it.
Many of their barrels are now cold hammer forged. This will be marked on the barrel with the other information under the lower hand guard - mine is not CHF.
So at this point I'm very satisfied with the upper and am looking forward to getting that trigger and doing some more shooting. I put that whole rifle together for about $800.

I bought 2 1-7" barrels from them. One is a 20" gov't profile for an A4 I was building and the other was a 14.5" with perm attached Phantom. Both shoot great. I use 77g Sierra MatchKings through them and couldn't be happier with either barrel.

BTW, the CMMG standard carrier is the 'semi', and they have the heavy-duty one as an option. I used their FA BCG in my upper and it is working fine with no signs of any unusual wear in the upper or BCG.
