I'm helping a friend build his first AR.  He wants the gun to fill a RECCE type role; good for short ranges, but able to handle longer engagements.  I'd love to just get one of the Recon barrels from some of the vendors here, but I don't think that's economically feasible.

Thought maybe look at CMMG barrels.  Those of you who own them, what kind of groups are you getting out to say 300-400m?  I was specifically looking at a midlength gas system, but I'd love to have info on anything.  Thanks.

I just shot my new CMMG 18" chrome  lined, medium weight 1:8 twist  full length gas upper this weekend.

It has a  Leupold 1-4x 20mm shotgun scope on it so it isn't set up to be a precision rifle.  The reticle covers all of the 4" bulls eye at 200 yds and paralax is factory set at 75 yds.

At 200 yds I fired two three shot groups with Black Hills 75 grain match.  First group was 2" 2nd group was 4"  Not spectacular but considering the scopes intended function I thought it was very acceptable.

Not much of a testament to its accuracy at 200 yds but why waste more of the Black Hills with this set up. I didn't intend for this to be tack driver.

I believe all CMMG barrels are chrome lined so I do not really think of them as precision barrels.

I don't shoot out to 300 yds., but I have shot out to 100 meters.  I've shot 3" groups with my 16" mid length from CMMG.  I was shooting with 62gn M855, and iron sights.

I suggest you guys do more math on the subject before ruling out a  Denny's recon barrel.

A CMMG barrel is $235 for "barrel only".  All you get is the barrel and nothing else.

A Denny's Recon barrel is $320, BUT it comes with a headspaced bolt.

If you go with the CMMG barrel, you'll need to purchase a bolt/carrier group for around $120 (Price for WOA complete bolt group on ADCO's website) for a total of $355.

For the Recon barrel, you can get the carrier assembly from ADCO for $75 for a total of $395.

$40 is absolutely NOTHING when you consider the amazing accuracy potential of the Recon barrel.

I have a CMMG barrel, (14.5" mid) and I am happy with it, it's perfect for what I wanted it for (CQB match) and will most likely buy more from them...

I also have a Denny's recon barrel that is an absolute LASER compared to anything I've ever owned!  It's sub MOA accurate even with GA Arms canned heat!!! (the good but cheap stuff).  It's amazing!

I'm not saying it's "better" than a CMMG barrel, but for the intended purpose you listed, the Denny's recon barrel is the best option IMHO.

CMMG makes an 18" one in 8 twist SPR barrel. Look on the web site.
