As I was cleaning my rifle last night, I noticed a gray film on the inside of my CMT upper.  The gray film wasn't solid, the corners and other places of wear were black.  As I used my Hoppies soaked Q-tip to clean around the gas tube and inside the receiver, I noticed the black parts getting bigger.  It seems that this film is coming off.  What is this film for?  Is it supposed to come off? What should I do about it?  I don't really want to take my upper apart to send the rcvr back, but I guess I will if I Have to.  I'll get some pictures tonight if anyone is interested.  Thanks.

That gray stuff is a dry film lubricant.  It will come off with some lubes and cleaners.  It is no big deal.  I cleaned all of mine out with brake cleaner once it started to come off on the inside.  It won't hurt anything, you still have hard coat anodizing underneath it.

Great.  I'm glad it's no big deal.  Thanks.
