| I am fairly new to reloading, have purchased an overal length cartridge gauge (for measuring distance of bullet from rifling) and was wondering if I could get some advice on the best distance between rifling and bullet. (The gauge manufacturer recommends .020) Of course I want safety, but also the best accuracy. |

M1AJon, I might be a little help, but there are certainly people with more direct knowledge of what you're asking. I assume you are reloading for an AR-15 and you will be loading from a magazine. If that is the case, it won't matter because any bullet seated to be close to the rifling will not fit in the mag. I load the longest bullet that will still fit in the mag. If you are shooting single shot, your particular barrel will determine the best distance. Start, say .040 away and move in in .005 increments keeping a watchful eye for signs of high pressure. I hope that helps. |
