What kind of legal paper work do you get/need when you do a build it yourself AR in California? Thanks for any input.

Your dealer will fill out a 4473 for the lower, nothing else is needed.  You might try posting additional questions in the California Hometown forums, you need to make sure you navigate California's AW laws correctly.

There is no special 'paperwork' required, other than the federal 4473 form and DROS signature/fingerprint for the firearm component (lower receiver).  This is providing that the lower receiver is not on the Assault Weapon list (most new ones are not, the list is old).  The other parts are just parts and can be purchased online (also you must watch federal laws regarding SBRs, etc).  You do need to be sure not to run afoul of Calfornia's many "Assault Weapon" laws.  Read CAREFULLY and decide what is right for you, or you might end up in jail or worse over a piece of metal.
