I would like to calculate point blank range for my 14.5" LMT, but I'm not sure how to do it.
By point blank range, I mean the ability to hit a 12-18" target from X yards to X yards without holding the sight on anything except the center of the target (not the "he shot him at point blank range" definition you see in cop movies) I have a 1-4x scope that I'd like to put on my LMT, but its an old hunting scope and adjusting elevation is, well, largely pointless and not at all easy. I'd like to simply zero the rifle at a given range (similar to the 36/300 battle zero) and then know at what ranges I can expect to hit "minute of target" with little to no adjustment in hold. I figure I'll chrony my load and then see what the drops are calculated at for various zero ranges, and then I'll be able to tell at what ranges it will hit or miss the target -- does anyone have a better method? Thanks. |

Use a calculator. Try this one: JBM Calculator
Maybe an easier one to use: ShootersCalculator |

If you zero at 50 yards, you will easily accomplish your goal from 0-300 yards. |

You appear to be asking for a battlesight zero - based on your description, you may be best served by a 50/200m zero, as it is the flattest trajectory inside of 200m.
Few "combat" sight are configured to adjust elevation "on the fly," and are usually "set and forget" in nature. Effective hits at range are acheived through the use of holdovers. Other common BZOs are the 25/300m zero, and the 100m zero. The 50/200m is, I daresay most popular amongst civilian enthusiasts, while some have a preference for the 100m. The 25/300m is the one most commonly used by the military, and hypothetically, allows for what you describe - more or less consistent hits on an 18" silhouette at ranges up to 300m, with little deviation from COM POA necessary for hits wothin the full target-form. ~Augee |
