Hi, sorry if this has a been beaten to death, but I was told that I could own a .22lr ar15 with detatchable mags in California as long as it is made so you cant convert calibers. Is this true? Thanks for any helpful info.

*In theory,* that is correct.  In reality, it would be very difficult to do.  No preexisting mags designed to work with the current conversion kits would work, so you'd have to design and manufacture mags as well as have a lower custom-machined.  Then, you'd need to submit the design to the DOJ and get their written approval.

heres what Bushmaster responded with :

Bushmaster's .22LR rifle http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/Carbon15/az-c1522lr.asp uses a lower receiver that will accept .223 type magazines and can be converted to a California Assault Weapon if a non restricted Carbon 15 .223 type upper receiver was installed on it.

             Thank you,
             Jim Eden, Tech Support

That doesnt really help much?
