| I have a Bushmaster Carbon 15 (Carbine) and am looking to add a ff handguard. I wouldn't think that this would be a problem on the Carbon Fiber, but better to check and be safe. Anyone have any answers for this? I'm looking at YHM or Midwest for a FF. Can't really afford the Laru or DD and I see too many mixed reviews on the UTG. Thanks in advance. |
Why is that? Stock it shoots great. I wanted to add a fore grip and light. From my understanding, there is a possibility of twisting the gas tube with use of a fore grip. I don't care about "cool factor," I want functionality. I don't know much about the Carbon 15 other than I found out that I can't do a gas piston conversion. UTG does have a free float, one of my buddies has one. It's heavy and made in China. I was trying to avoid that one and looking at the Midwest or YHM. I'm just trying to gain some insight for my rifle. I may end up passing this one to my son and building another one. It will be a slow process.....

This is the opinion of a rank amateur, but it looks like Bushy sells the Carbon-15 R21 with a free-float in place straight from the factory.
Now, I notice that it's a lightweight forend they've installed, but I can't imagine you're looking to hang night vision, VFG, bipod, flashlight, IR target designator, etc., etc. off of a rifle for which you're going out of the way to purchase lightweight parts... FWIW |
| Yes, I bought it to be a light weight weapon. The only thing I plan on putting on the front end is a forward grip and a light. I already have an Eotech installed on it. I am seriously looking at a gas piston for it as an upgrade. Adams Arms stated that theirs won't work in the carbon model. Bushmaster states theirs WILL work in my carbon model. Their gas piston kit is built under license exclusively from Ares Defense Systems (per the Bushmaster tech guy). I was thinking of the Osprey Gas Piston for my rifle. I can't use a standard AR FF with this model though w/o milling the gas block (per Bushmaster). Soooo, I would need to upgrade to something like a DD Omega if it will fit around the piston. Bushmaster offered to do everything for me, but their parts are a bit pricey & I would be w/o my rifle for awhile. Part of the deal Bushmaster was trying to sell me was a new carbon fiber upper. It's brand new, and actually has a forward assist and dustcover. Plus, the rail is lower and has a flip up rear sight. Mine is about four or five years old and and has a rail that is a bit elevated with a perm. attached rear sight. They wanted to charge $190.00 for the upper receiver (stripped). I didn't notice the lack of dustcover when I ordered it as Bushmasters web pics weren't that big. Ohh well, it's been a great rifle so far, unbelievably light. |
| Ok, I ordered the Osprey Gas Piston for my Carbon 15. We shall see if it mates up and if it does, how it shoots. The consensus in here is that it's a good setup. I am trying to figure out what I'm going to go with when I build my next AR here over this winter. I was thinking of the Titan Defense upper, but they still haven't returned my call. |

The Carbon 15 upper uses a proprietary barrel nut, so you will need to use a FF handguard that is designed to attach to the OEM nut. The outside dimensions are the same as a std barrel nut, but the inside size is different.
I built a lightweight gun for my wife's friend using a chopped down Cav Arms lower & the Carbon 15 upper. We bought a carbon fiber handguard for it, but it was a no-go. I ended up putting a Daniel Defense Omega on hers. |
