Has anyone shot any groups with their rifle's carry handle sights, removing and replacing the carry handle between each shot?
Curious as to how this might effect grouping. The mounting system looks repeatable intuitively but I am not sure in practice. Thanks. |

The only way to get repeatable zero when mounting is to tighten down the optic to the exact same tension in the exact same spot everytime, thats hard to do with those knobs. |
| I haven't pulled the carry handle off between each shot, but I did zero the carry handle, then remove it to zero the M68, then for the hell of it I decided to qualify with the irons instead of the RDS. Put the handle back on, confirmed my zero quickly and it was nuts on where it had been. NO change in zero at all. |

This may be true with optics like the ACOG, but with a rear sight it's another story. With an ACOG, the entire optical system is less than 8-10" long, and is entirely mounted to the top rail. With iron sights, the front part of the system stays permanently mounted. The overall system (sight radius) is much longer (this means minor errors or shifts have less effect), and you have no optical zoom, so you're much less likely to notice any shift if it does occur. Personally I've never tested it because I don't have a carry handle, but I would guess you're going to stay within about 1MOA of your original zero. If you're not sure, however, spend a day at the range and a couple boxes of ammo testing it! I know that I can completely disassemble my M1 Garand's rear sight assembly and put it back together at the same place (10 clicks up from bottom, 8 clicks left of center), and it will hit the same place every time. So I would suspect that simply removing the rear sight from the rail, then replacing it and torquing it similarly would result in the same (for all intents and purposes) POI. |
