Today I took my DPMS Ar-15 to the range today to sight in the iron sights.
I did the changes per this site Improved Battlesight Zero
I bought a front sight tool so I could adjust the front sight for elevation per instructions.
I have trijicon front and rear sights installed, rear sight has large and small opening just like stock.

Now I set up a target at 25 yards to work out any horizonal adjustments. After adjusting I put 5 rounds dead center of target.
Rear sight at 8/3 -2 clicks.

I then set a target at 50 yards.
First 3 shots were 5 inches high but centered. So I turned the front sight down (counter clock wise) 8 clicks. I shot 3 rounds again. I am now 3 inches too high. So down another 5 clicks. Three more shots, now here is where things went bad. I am now at 6 inches above center. I turned back to previous setting and it shot 3 inches above center.
At this point I am confused. I tried moveing one click at a time and the best I can get is 3 inches above center of target. So I thought I would move the rear sight and start over.
I moved rear sight right at the 8/3.
First 2 shots I am 8 inches high, almost off the paper.
So I turned the front sight down 16 clicks. Next 2 shots were 3 inches above center.
I then played moving the front sight down as far as it would go,,,still 3 inches above center of target.

I move back to the 25 yard target. Without changing anything the next five shot hit dead center.

At this point I set back thinking that I should of went with a flat top instead of a carry handle. But then I think there has to be a way to get this right. The military used this set up for years with no problems.

Any one with any ideas?
It would see that I need a front sight with more adjustment.
I even tried moving the front sight way up (Clockwise) and could never get it to hit center at 50 yards.

What's the manual that came with your rifle say about zeroing?

25 yds is a battle zero.  get your zero.
switch to the small peep sight.
move to 200 yds and rezero if needed or fine tune the zero.

do not adjust from 25-200.

My manual states to sight in at 25 meters (27.3403 yd)
But from reading the info on this web site most agree with the 50 yard zero.

I will set the rear sight back that way it was and try zeroing at 25 meters and see what the point of impact is at 50 yards.
The way it is now 25 yard zero and 3 inches height at 50 yards to me is way too much of a difference.

Edit:
I see what the problem is.
The Trijicon front sight has an upper and lower part to it. This if for once you have the sights adjusted you can turn the front sight that has the tritium on it so it will be faceing towards you. The front sight adjusting tool just barely engages the lower part, sometimes not at all.
I have to use a small allen wrench to hold down the detent and push hard with the adjusting tool to actually make the adjustments.

More than likely it was hit and miss with actually making adjustments when I was trying to sight the weapon in.
Back to the range tomorrow and I will report back it this is the cause.

Here is a picture with the upper and lower part of the sight aligned with each other.

Here is the upper part of the sight, I moved it to show that it rotates. The bottom part of the sight has the actual front sight adjustment notches in it.
This allows you after you have made sight adjustments you can rotate the night sight back towards you.

Yeah, I returned one of those Trijicon front sights because of that "rotating front pin".  It was wobbly and loose as the dedent barely held it in place because of the height.  Went back to my stock front sight post.  Good luck with it, keep us posted.

Back to the range and sighted the AR iron sights in at 50 yards.
Rear sight is 8/3 - 2 clicks per the improved battlesight instructions I posted above.
Inital sighting in was at 25 yards then moved to 50 yards. 4th attempt at zeroing and that is where is is staying at.
We did verify it at a 200 yard range. Best we was able to do was a 2 inch group one time. But all 5 will hit within a 5 inch circle everytime. I figure that that was good enough for iron sights. My old eyes can barely make out the target at 100 yards.
The range I was at had a 300 yard target. 15"x15" metal plate hanging from a chain. I was able to go up two clicks which put it right at 8/3 and hit the plate. Later this fall we will go for the 500 yard and see if I can hit it.
Now for the sad part. Being that my old eyes can not see the target very well past 100 yards I had to install my TA01 ACOG. Was impressed. More adjustment that I would of thought to get it to zero at 100 yards but dead on for the 200 and 300 yard crosshairs after we got it zeroed.
Here is a picture of the 50 yards open sights...Walmart ammo. remington umc 55 gr.
Most definately will have to put some match grade ammo thru it and see what happens.
