I'll ever be the first person to admit a great pair of knobs have their place, but
not on MY carry handle.  I'll be looking to replace this thing soon enough, but
i'm curious as to if there is a smaller, less obtrusive nut or ? that can be used on
these things. Doesn't matter a lick to me that the factory knobs can be removed
without tools...it looks like something half that size would still do the job. Not
sure of the thread size either, but in any event these puppies have gotta GO !

I've always thought they look stupid as hell. I really like the look of ANY A2 rifle/carbine better anyway. I'm with you, I wish someone had a smaller set of thumbscrews for flatops. The Armalite screws are the ugliest as a side note.

Prolly just as easy to get an A2 upper.

The nuts Justin at CNC Guns makes for his A1 Carry Handles are the smallest I've seen.

I have 2 sets, IM me if you're interested in a swap.

I took off the knobs, used a dremel to shorten the screw threads to about 1/4", and installed hex nuts from the hardware store.  That is as small as you're going to get without going to an A2.

Damn, Desert_AIP beat me too it but I also have those knobs that CNC supplies with their handles and would be willing to trade or if you don't want to trade, I'll just buy the knobs you don't want? IM me if interested

The RRA A2 BUIS has hex screws in place of the single knob most "chopped carry handle" style A2 BUIS's have.  That is the reason I run that particular brand.

The A1 Carry handle made by one of our members is held on by hex screws instead IIRC.

I don't know of any nuts or screws to retro fit though.

Wouldn't it be interesting if LaRue were to make a quick detach carry handle?

I don't see much of a need. Why would you need to QD a carry handle? You're left without sights. If it's to put an optic on, you should just get BUIS...

Funny, I've been blowing off doing this forever...
This thread got me off my butt and I just replaced my chk with a nylock nut.
I need to see if Fastenal has phosphate coated ones.

Giant knobs is the reason I'm gonna get a YHM  A2 style BUIS instead of the
LMT version.   I like the idea of an A2 upper, but not on this piece..it's my
only flattop !   Looks like it might be time to cruise the hardware and see if
they have poly lock nuts in the right thread size.  Paint 'em up and add a
couple of washers underneath and it ought to look a little more civilized.
Amazing that this issue hasn't been fixed aeons ago, but then most folks
probably ditch the handle first chance they get.  Maybe it won't even bother
me once the dumb thing is off the weapon.

You don't need the QD - but the lower profile of the LaRue levers combined with the absolute return to zero = WINNER!

I dunno if I should speak for the majority, but your highlighted text seems fairly accurate for most that have flat tops. Many prefer the flat top due to the flexibility it provides. The thumb screws don't bother most, but my handle sits in my gear bag getting ignored in place of optics & a buis.

QUIB = On right track !!   Thanks, bro....and who ever dreamed up that
carry handle you can't even use as a carry handle: YOY!!!  Sometimes
wonder how it would work with the bottom strap cut out, but in a couple of
months she'll be all optic'd out, and this wiill be a non issue, most likely,
til it's time for another flattop EBR !!!

For those who have done this, where did you get your hardware and what size and thread pitch?

I went throught the effort to get the knob off a LMT BUIS only to be unable to find a nut that would work at the local hardware stores.  So I put it back together but really would like to replace the knob since I think it is too big and once on this rifle it will stay there indefinitely.

TIA

Quib, all I am seeing is a red X.  What was the picture you posted?

That ROCK unit looks like the killer piece I need for my soon to be aquired BUIS.
Now if the designers of the removable carry handle had used a set-up like this,
but with four counter rotated screws....we would not be having this conversation.
Perhaps they were invested heavily in a screw machine plant with excess knob
inventory !!

Do they go by any other names?  I cant seem to find the toggle without the actual bike skewer so no choice of thread pitch.

I think (I hope) he was kidding.

A bike QR would be even bigger and way more likely to pop loose than a knob.

Hmmm...  Shame there isn't a way to adapt a small pair of those 1/4 turn dzus fasteners like the hot rod guys use to the carry handle attachments...

Somehow my surfing of the RRA's site was incomplete.   That is very slick way to mount the site using a minimum of the top rail and having full adjustability.  I like it!
