does anyone shoot cast bullets from their AR period? what kind of results?
anyone shooting them from a CHF barrel? what kind of results? anything on either to think about, watch if going to try it? |
| Cast bullets can't be driven to the speeds needed to cycle the gun, so plan on your AR being a bolt action. I can't comment on whether the bare lead will cause any problems with the gas system - probably not as its not much different from running a .22LR conversion unit. |

I can't comment on whether the bare lead will cause any problems with the gas system - probably not as its not much different from running a .22LR conversion unit. Loads should be able to be developed that would easily cycle the action. Velocities of the bullets aren't the thing, port pressure is. Having said that, developing a load tailored to make te rifle a straight pull would be a great idea for small game shooting allowing you to save the cases. The gas port is always a factor in cast bullet shooting in a auto rifle, and you may find the bore between the gas port and the muzzle leads faster than the rest of the barrel. In addition, the 1/7 twist of many rifles is no good on lead bullets. 1/9 is better, but the original 1/12 is perfect. There is also the potential that leading of the gas tube could cause diminishment of the ID of the tube. Would be a fun project. |
