I have a stupid question about the charging handle on my new AR. After you pull back and release the charging handle, before pulling the trigger to dry fire the rifle, is the charging handle real loose with no resistance?
I had a Bushmaster about 5 years ago and I cant remember how it was  . If this isn't how it's suppose to be what could the problem be? I appreciate any info I could get. Thanks !!!

With magazine in, no ammo, pull and release charging handle to chamber a round. Before pulling trigger to dry fire the charging handle is completely loose. You can pull back on it and there is no resistance at all. You could use 1 finger.
It's like something is unhooked.The bolt works fine and the charging handle does its job as far as pulling the bolt back and you can also lock the bolt open ok. Thanks !!! |

It definitely shouldn't be loose with the bolt closed... it will be loose with the bolt open. I don't see how a CH can grab the bolt before it is charged and then after it is charged, lose that connection all of a sudden. You have a picture of it doing this? Also, with a mag in and no ammo, the bolt should be locking back.
When you release the charging handle does it fly forward with the bolt or does it stay back and loose? |

If you're trying to cycle the bolt with a mag in and no ammo, the bolt is locking to the rear. If the bolt is locking to the rear, nothing is pulling the charging handle forward. If nothing is pulling the charging handle forward, yes, it will be floppy and slide freely. If you press the bolt release, the bolt will go forward into battery, it will take the charging handle with it, then you can fire/dry fire. |

Look in the ejection port.
If you're trying to cycle the bolt with a mag in and no ammo, the bolt is locking to the rear. If the bolt is locking to the rear, nothing is pulling the charging handle forward. If nothing is pulling the charging handle forward, yes, it will be floppy and slide freely. If you press the bolt release, the bolt will go forward into battery, it will take the charging handle with it, then you can fire/dry fire _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ This is exactly how it is operating so I don't think there is a problem. If a empty mag is in and you pull the charging handle, the bolt should lock to the rear. This will free up the charging handle. |
