Just a quick question, as I'm a perfectionist...

Does the charging handle always end up showing wear, as in the anodizing rubbing off along the sides and above the latch? Aside from ensuring it's lubed well, is there any other way to keep it looking like new? I'm not worried about it, just curious.

Thanks and regards...

Your rifle is a tool. Treat it as such.

Parts are ruined.  Send to me for proper disposal.

The wear that concerns me is the charging handle latch to the port side of the upper catch.  My CH is losing the anodizing (no biggie) but the latch is wearing the catch rib on the upper.

Normal wear too.

The only way to keep your rifle "new" is to put in your safe and never touch it.  Embrace the normal wear and tear as part of the rifle's unique character.  Now...go out and shoot that sucker!!!

Put a sharpie in your pocket and use it after each round.

OK.

Have you ever seen anyone heli-arc a new rib at the rear end of the slot to catch the CH latch?

I'm just asking...

Its a Bushhamster with about 2500 rounds through it.  It just seems a mite premature to me.

You could keep a second upper in the safe for showin off.

Nah, I'm not worried about the scuffs from throwing it down the driveway.  I am worried about the CH latch not having anything to latch onto.

If & when that day ever arrives, simply swap in a new $100 upper.

I've noticed the same recently...I guess I pull up when I rack the charging handle, because the top of the inside of the receiver has totally lost the anodizing...

Seriously, its an AR and last it was classified it was an assualt rifle. You will break it but it will take time and for the record yes I have an AR with over 15,000 rounds fired in it with mostly Wolf metal casing ammo that everyone talks about and I have not swapped anything period and I also have a few that looks new but seldom fired. If you want no wear and tear then put it on the shelf and baby it.

Get a metal charging handle and no more worries about breakage and the rest of the knicks and blemishes just deal with it.

You need 2 AR's if you ask me, one to look at and one to shoot with that will make you happy for sure.
;)

no hate here just being real.

Well I just took a look at the M16s in our arms room that get beat up by PVTs over here in Army Land on a VERY regular basis...

They're worn, lots of shiny spots (esp the high points) but aside from about 1mm of slight "wear" and a lack of anodizing around the CH latch, they all look fine.  No problems with any of them (as far as that goes).

This is all normal stuff.  Metal rubbing against metal causes wear.
